20 inch wheels on LIMITED

I'm not sure if anyone follows this thread anymore or not, but I thought I'd mention what tires I settled on. Stock rims, 2012 4Runner Limited, I put on Goodyear Wrangler Adventure w/Kevlar 275/55/20s. I got a great price, free shipping to my house, and there was a $80 mail-in rebate from Goodyear for buying them by 12/31/14. They only cost me slightly more than the cheapo tires I was previously considering, well under $1000 delivered and with no sales tax. I guess it pays to shop around a bit... And no- it was not Tirerack or Tirebuyer.

Awesome riding tires and they make it look like a completely different truck! It's too early to report if there's any significant change in gas mileage though.
 
Drove for eight months with these (granted, only 4,500 kms) before swapping to the 20-inch winters (also on OE Limited rims). Problem I have now is gawking at the truck even more because it looks so much better without bicycle tires.

However, according to several nannys, I should have died in a flaming and preventable death from tire blow out by now because I exceeded the stock rim width by a 1 cm on each side. In reality, I enjoy one of the nicest, quietest rides around with such a high UTQG, these tires will dry out before they wear out.

This guy on here has that look (sorry I forget the user who I sniped the picture from). And personally, I love it. I'm debating getting the same setup, but with dark gray wheels.

You told out loud what I am thinking everytime I visit this thread.

When my stock tires wear-out, I am totally keeping these good looking stock wheels, will revisit this thread and buy the best choice of 255/75/20 tires and be happy to have saved myself 1500$ on new wheels for absolutly no purpose.

But see, you have some sense. Your eyes are wide open. You have to assume that 90% of the people reading something like this will take everything as gospel and then sue when they are that one in a million guy that has a problem. The world, especially now and especially regarding all things mechanical or physics, is like an atrophied peach. Used to be nice and full and now it's just ugly and wrinkled.

BMW make their cars and SUVs with staggered setup, the back wheel is wider then the front, 4Runner 4x4 system won't except that, so you only option is go square setup. I had 295s on my 13' 4Runner and it looked good, but I had 18" wheels.

I'll admit that I'm not 100% certain on this, but I believe most 4WD/AWD systems require that the tires rotate at the same speed. This translates into a requirement that the outer diameters (and circumferences) are the same front to back. That being said, there are allowed tolerances to account for new tires vs old tires (such as using a full-size spare).

In summary, I think a staggered setup would be accepted by the 4Runner, so long as the outer diameters are the same (or very nearly the same). This might have other consequences on the suspension or drivetrain, though, once you move to different widths, rolling resistance, and offsets (but, again, I'm not an expert - just throwing out there what I know about staggered setups from the past).
 
I thought the stock 20x7 wheels with skinny looking tires just do not look right for the Limited. So I changed them out for 20x9 with 275/55 tires. I'm happy with the results in both performance and appearance. There are lots of considerations, preferences, and opinions surrounding this fine, very capable vehicle. This forum reflects that. Thanks to all who take the time to contribute.

After reading alot on this forum and talking with several tire dealers, I made the same choice as you have, with the Toyo Open Country AT II in 275/55-20 on 20x9 Black Rhino wheels. The 2012 Limited remains stock otherwise. I appreciate your insight and comments. I have found the same experience with about 10K on the new setup. Much happier with the handling. Good choice.
