2000 4-Runner bumped into neutral while on the interstate, now will not turn over...

I feel like your problems are completely unrelated and coincidental.
Transfer case went kaboom? Lift all four wheels test to see if 4wd works properly and when in two wheel its not spinning the fronts. You can do this by hand. Just my suggestion.

That wouldn't explain why the engine won't start though, and he says it sounds funny while it's cranking.

I know. I was replying on the possible transfer case problem, but I was tired while posting and missed the post confirming that the transfer case shifter didn't get moved.

Work and family has kept me busy and I have not had a chance to get under the truck. I'll report back soon.

Here is the verdict........

Something let loose internally. There is a quarter size hole in the engine block on the passenger side. I'm not going to dig in any further, but I assume it to be the crank or a rod.

It has been a great truck for us, but I am not in a position to get a replacement engine. I have decided to put it up for sale as is. Where can I look to determine a realistic value for the truck?

I really appreciate the input from you folks. I wish that I had joined the forum sooner.

I again wanted to say thanks!! I Really appreciate the input from you folks. A fellow came by on Friday and picked her up. He had a low mileage truck that was totaled and will transplant his engine over.

It's not the shifting into neutral that is going to bleed you here, it's the shifting BACK into drive with the cruise set at 72 mph. ;-)

And my educated guess is yes, she broke something by doing that.

Make sure she knows that if something like that happens, tap the brake to disengage the CC before you do anything else.

I was basing my reply on this:

"She may have gotten on the gas, but she is not sure. She also mentioned that the truck smoked as she pulled over. I agree that it sounds like the starter, but don't see how it could be related. I will check it."

True on what you stated. I just wasn't sure if she might have been overriding the CC with the accelerator and in that case I would say 1) foot off the accelerator and 2) tap the brake to be sure.

*Not pointing fingers or making accusations about your most likely lovely wife* But are you sure that's all that happened? This just doesn't add up. I replicated the exact scenario on the way home from work today and my trucks completely fine.
