2000 4runner 5speed opinion

There is no way I would pay that much for that many miles. Best bet for you would be to make a list of your must needs. What is needed? So you want the sport hood, 5 sp, and a certain color?

There was just a 99 Highlander in Redding CA with 146,000 miles for $6900. It was already lifted and had a full service history. IMO a pretty good price for the car. There is a 2000 supercharged 4runner in Denver for $8800, and has 144k. I would pass on this and keep looking. It's out there, just have to wait for it!
 
It's a little steep, but for out here it's not out of the park. I picked up my 2000 sport for 8K, has a few more miles on it.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'd say $8k is the max I want to spend on the truck itself so I can allocate enough resources for the build. I prefer cloth interior, 5 speed manual under 150k miles.

Cool. I search about 4-5 hours a day (which is getting annoying and my girl might leave me soon) so if anything pops up around you ill post the link in here.

More like 8k max. If it had like 75,000 miles on it then cool. I think he will have it for a bit.

I did not see it…as for my asking price, Supply and Demand and don’t need to sell…already have an offer at $9,800 so if you are interested you know what it will take…I have 2 of them and they are the best…that is why so few are out there…Happy Craigslisting

I wouldn't get too hung up about mileage - condition and service history are far more important. A well-maintained 200k 4Runner is a better buy than an iffy 100k one.

That is correct for 1999, but silver was added for 2000.
 
I'd like to hear some pros and cons for manual transmission in a 3rd gen 4runner. Has anyone regretted choosing either? Thanks
 
I had a 97 5speed for 10 years which was a daily driver. Loved everything about it except for all the shifting in city traffic. Sold the 97 and recently purchased an 02 automatic. Pros of the manual-- 2 mpg's better. Liked controlling the gears in snow/ice and didn't have to worry about pink milkshake. Pros of 02 automatic- Don't have to shift all the time. Wife likes the automatic much better!

I have a 1997 5-speed with E-locker and I LOVE IT!!! Couldn't be happier. But I enjoy manuals. The only time I regret it is driving in rush hour traffic :/ but that's a general for every manual haha, but I just stick it in 1st and idle forward; normally works well.

PRO-
I get to choose rpm's
Easy to pass people
Easy to keep RPM's high for hills/etc on or off-road
Keeps me focused on the road

CON-
traffic
requires attention
Harder to rock crawl (the whole needing 3 feet issue, though I don't have any issues, lo-range works great for this kind of obstacle)

I've had a 1983 Ford Bronco that was an automatic and off-roaded in. A 1994 4runner 5-speed that I off-roaded in (in signature) and now my 1997 4runner 5-speed that i off-road in (though not built yet, does great for being stock)

Personally I find a closer connection to the truck and obstacles with a manual, I feel disconnected from the truck in an automatic. But that's just my opinion, it's ultimately up to you. Best of luck man.
 
What to check before buying a 99 5speed?

This question is for some of you 4runner veterans out there. If I do find a 5 speed 99-02 stock 4runner, what are the basic things, or problem areas i should focus on before buying and during the test drive? Should I take it to an indy mechanic to check it over before the purchase or is that a waste of time?

Miles, color, leaks, tires, maintenance, clutch last replaced, rust, number of owners, accidents, timing belt last changed, where it used to live (for the rust), smoker?

When you're driving it, make sure 4wd engages, lo and hi. Brakes work properly (pulsating is a common issue), accelerates good, get up to speed like 80mph and check for any shaking or loss of control. If it has a locker, make sure that works as well.
