Problem: Automatic 2000 4Runner w 175k shows in Reverse while in Park in the morning after being cold(nasty but fun east coast winter '14) It will shift in reverse and engage, no slip yet all around, then shift into 1st gear but it still shows that it is in Reverse. It will go forward, but not shift out of 1st. As it warms up the dash lights will start to vary in strength/work as i shift into different gears/turn car on/off etc. After she warms up the D or Drive light will start to work then she will engage and work normally once the that happens. This morning the D light came on faintly with the reverse also glowing faintly and the car ran normally - after about 10 minutes of warm up. By the time I got to work all was normal including lights. I expect the same issue to happen tmrw. Check engine light will come and go.

All. Thanks for reading. Any advice or ideas would be greatly appreciated! On the verge of taking her in.

For anyone who read this I think I solved my problem by simply cleaning the battery terminals. Crazy that a transmission issue was directly related to a battery voltage. $3 fix vs a $3500 new tranny.
