I just bought a 2000 4runner with 108k miles on it in what appeared to be great shape. Previous owner had records for all maintenance done by certified Toyota and timing belt was changed at 70k miles. Anyways my problem is that today i was driving when all of a sudden the oil light indicator came on prompting me to pull over to the nearest gas station and check to see what was the problem. Unfortunately i didn't make it and the truck shuttered to a stop where i learned that what appears to be the pulley on the driver side has possibly broken and forced itself through the plastic covering on the timing belt. I know these 3.4 don't have interference in the motor but what i'm wondering is if maybe the oil light was brought on by a loose belt or, hopefully not, a bad oil pump? I consider myself a pretty novice mechanic and any tips would be helpful!
