2000 4Runner Questions

Hello all,
I am new to this forum and it looks like the Go-To place for questions and answers.

I just purchased a 2000 4Runner Limited-Auto 2WD and it has 157k miles on it. I have a couple of questions that I would like to get feed back on.

-The stock CD/Casette/Radio back light is out and I was ondering if I should just ditch it and get an after market replacement since the forum posts that I have read indicate pulling the radio and soldering new lights, etc - suggestions?

-There is a whining noise coming from 1st gear leaving a stop, once it shifts into 2nd the noise is gone. It is not major but noticable, would a transmission service remedy this?

Glad to be a member of this forum.

I'm sure that if you can fix the lights inside the stereo, there is a thread on it somewhere. I know that money can be tight but if mine went out I would drop in an aftermarket one or find a used one, maybe someone here has one. I hear that there are adapter harnesses that allow an aftermarket unit to plug right in.

As for the trany? Sorry I can't help you, mine is a manual. Has the trans fluid been changed?

I have this same problem on my 2000 Limited 4WD - radio light completely out at night now. Every once in a while I get a flicker. What really sucks is my 91 4Runner did the exact same thing! What's with these radios...
Did you ever find a resolution for fixing the light? I may pull mine apart and see if i can't find the short, but not holding my breath...

I had the same problem with my stereo but I just replaced it with a JVC head unit. Its weird, I bought my 4runner 2 years ago 2000 2wd limited auto and with 157k. Lol.
