2000 4runner, what do you see?

Rear dif lock button, non-working antenna, disturbingly clean engine bay, missing rear headrests, a very worn spot where somebody's foot was a lot, a number that looks like 185,436 in the window, lack of clutch pedal and rust.

That's what I see. Nothing like up close and personal to get a better picture, those were not too clear.

That worn spot is in the floor mat which is a good thing because that means the floor mats were always used and the carpeting underneath is probably nice (hopefully)

My truck was missing the rear headrests also when I bought it. What's up with that.

Probably had headrests with DVD players so they removed them and put the ones from the back seats on the front seats.

Did not notice anteanna. Thanks. The number I thought was a auction number. Could be mileage discrepancy.

Have a extended cab Silverado and too small for two kids and get better mileage.

There are literally 5 2000 4runners with 130 to 190 k miles in the $3200 to 4000 on Chicago Craigslist right now. I do not understand why all are so cheap, but want to get one of them.

I would just find one with the least rust (being chicago) and decent mileage. Picking up a 4R for that cheap lets you spend more money on fixing it up like you want. New bumper, rear headrests, antenna, floor mats, new tires, etc.

The description: 'small dent on right rear bumper' on the SR5 was entertaining.
(those dents are not uncommon)

Rust again. Really look hard especially at those rocker panels, though cladding and flares can make that a difficult endeavor. Of course pay attention to the frame as well- at the rear lower control arms is a good start, and the rear diff for pin holes.

Have you seen the 3rd gen buyer's guide on here?

Yes, I have. Not much on where to suspect rust.
 
Looked at 2, could not get ahold of 2 more. Headed home with empty trailer. Both had bad frame rust on passenger side

How far are you willing to drive? There are several good options in Milwaukee craigslist right now. More expensive, but all in better condition that the two you looked at. One is a 5 speed.

I'm on my second 4runner after many months of searching and my advice is to pay for a month of unlimited autocheck and run the vin number. 80% of the 4runner's I run through autocheck have mileage discrepancies and even more are way too rusty.

I didn't look at the links.

Assuming they are both 4wd, the SR5 will be part-time 4wd, and the Limited will have the Multi-Mode T-case.
