2000 4Runner won't come out of Park

I took apart the shift lever knob and the shifter housing and put it back together and now it won't come out of park. Brakes work fine - brake lights come on - I can't move it out of park even with the release button pushed.

Did you try to push the parking lock pawl button? It is to left of shifter near the P. You can put a small screwdriver in there and release it.
That should work.

Check to see if you accidentally undid the wiring to the shift lock solenoid ?

Part #33625-35050 inside shifter got turned around backwards

When I took apart the shifter knob, part #33625-35050 had foolishly got turned around which caused the thumb button not to push down all the way.

I turned it around so the downhill part faced forward put it back together and BINGO it came out of park.
