2000 4runner

Hi folks,

Found a 2000 4runner with 215k. Limited, auto, with rear differential. it's a 2nd owner car to a lady who owned it for the last 60k. She hasn't done any major maintenance other than timing belt since she bought it. The car has some interior scruffs due carrying dog but all bells and whistles work. Only thing that's keeping me hesitant is front right fender/bumper damage and possible valve gasket replacement that may need attention soon. I have noticed some oil discharge around spark plugs around driver side. She's willing to let it go for 5k. Is it worth it? it's about $900 below kbb.

Keep in mind i currently own 94 4runner with 5 speed manual and 4 wheel drive. had it for the past 4 years and i love it. I had my head gasket replaced, and all major service is up to date. She currently sits at 252k miles. I'm not desperate to upgrade. I'd like to upgrade to a 3rd gen because of its bigger motor and potential to mod as a specialized off road vehicle.

The front number it cost $450 new OEM. Timing belt , spark plugs, water tubes, head gasket with engine over haul cleaning it cost $1,100 in Toyota dealer. I would recommend you is worth it. The truck will makelike a brand new engine. And will improve more fuel.economy.

You can do better.. for 3k i would be in but other than that keep looking. On a side not i have owned 3 4runners and looked at about 30 and haven't come across one without some weeping at the valve covers.. very normal on these trucks, not saying it doesn't need to be addressed but i wouldn't let it scare you away.

Regardless of what kbb says, I'd be cautious about buying anything with 215k on it for $5k. The mileage can be irrelevant, but isn't always necessarily so. I'd pass, but whatever you choose, be sure to look for signs of engine sludge on those higher mileage ones.

thanks guys. the owner isn't willing to go lower than 5k as she feels like it's in good mechanical condition. not in a rush to buy - so im gonna pass and look around some more. really appreciate all your input.

Quick update - i ended up buying this 4runner. the owner and i negotiated down to a price that we were both happy with. So yeah, I'm super excited. I didn't realize it's a bit tough to find 4wd with rear differential feature here in the Bay Area. Let alone in limited trim level. After a quick wash - it looks pretty good. It's still a bit rough around the edges, but with some TLC, I see great potential in restoring and possibly modding in the future. Unfortunately, this will mean saying good bye to my 5speed 94 4runner. I don't have immediate plans for any mods, but I want to focus on doing all the preventative maintenance and giving it a real clean detail soon. Btw, my first impression of difference between my old truck vs the new is almost like night and day. 94 4runner feels like driving a tank, while the newer one feels like im riding in a luxury suv. i can really get used to riding in comfort for change although im really gonna miss manual transmission and the fold down tail gate.

On the leaky VCs, as others said it's super common. Mine were so loose I could turn some by hand a couple times. I only tightened mine up 4 years ago and they haven't leaked since. It did take a few weeks for all the oil to finish burning on the exhaust even though I cleaned things up as well as I could. Luck! :banana:
