I think... we can sum it up
you can unplug the electrical connections from the engine/trans on 96-00 trucks and just swap the engine + trans over. no problem.
there are 2 large wiring harness in the truck
1. engine wire harness, goes thru the firewall on the drinkers side and hooks up to the ECU behind the glove box.
2. body wire harness, goes thru the fire wall on the captains side and hooks up to the body fuse box on the lower left.
These wire harness do not just swap around between years (99,00 are the same) other years not the same.
you will have to swap over injectors from ded truck hopefully not toasted?
T4R2014 brings up a good point, if either of these trucks are cali emission( have 2x cats ) the headers are different and the auto trans dipstick is also different on cali trucks to clearance those headers and downpipe. so... hopefully both trucks are federal or cali but not mismatched.
your good I think, just don't mix and match wire harness.
1st, thanks for your replys.....after reading your other post about MAF's, I think I will make that switch...reading threads on it looks easy.....98 MAF over tripple the price of the 99 and newer and better air low.
I thought the injectors interchangeable ( pre 99 to after 99) as long as all 6 are replaced, I have some rebuilt ones sitting on my shelf that were for another project, the newere ones,, but no longer have that one....how come I would have to switch them ? Was under the impression newer ones would fit into the older ones and were an improvent.. I thought the connectors were the same......are they so different that fuel rails etc have to change...i thought I remeber reading about some performance ones guys use when they supercharge...and they fit all years 96-2002..I could be wrong
will also convert to heated mirrors, they are really helpful here...and the center console swap....same guy that has motor has all the stuff to do all the mods, including the maf and airbox
do motor mounts interchange, I thought you said one style was better than the other as far as vibration.. ( style or year type/style)
now for these guys to make up thier mind if they want to really sell the 98....its a limited, tan leather, locker, 185k....just dead motor. My last conversation with him yesterday was....yes I really want to sell it and pay off the shop bill but I might just put a new engine in and am waiting for an estimate on that......arggg
if nothing else im learning more about these different year 4runners and this thread might help others in the future
thanks again for your help...ill back off on more questions till I find out if im doing this or not, but your info has helped a lot in letting me know this is able to be done
thanks
