2000 Limited 4runner - disconnecting antenna mast motor

I drive a 2000 Toyota 4runner Limited 4x4. A while ago, something on my antenna broke so that when I turn on the radio, the antenna goes up and just falls out. Probably shook something loose from driving too fast on gravel roads. Whatever, it's not really an issue for me because I usually just use a cassette to 3.5mm thing anyways.
Until now. I would like to be able to use my antenna, but I can't in it's current state. From other questions on the forum, I've been able to get the motor exposed, but can I just unplug the motor while it's in the up position? Will my antenna function properly if the motor is unplugged? Thanks!

Yes you can unplug the motor so it won't attempt to draw it back down. It will still send signal to the stereo.

I'm having the same issue with a 99 Limited but I can't seem to get to the motor since the limited fender flares are in the way. None of the guides I've read seem to address this. Can you tell me how you managed to get the liner out of the way to get to the motor? I see 5 bolts holding the flares to the body but I don't want to break the clips holding the flares to the body above.
