2000 Toyota SR5 4 runner tranny problems or torque

Have a 2000 Toyota 4 runner that has what I beleive to be transmision issues. Have a SR5 4x4 Automatic transmission. Vehicle was working and then quit almost at once. Really didnt notice weird sounds. When its cold the transimision will engage, vehicle will move but after a couple minutes, gears wont engage. No leaks and the leaks and the levels are good. Had a couple of friends look at it and I am getting varying opinions.

One says transmission, the other torque converter. The vehicle is in the driveway and I am reluctant to take it to a shop when I have no idea what the issue is. I guess my questions are twofold.

Where do I even begin to find a rebuilt transmission online? There is a sea of info and it seems difficult to find what I want. Hoping to find tranny that has a warranty. Last quote I got was $3996. With my miles, vehicle is worth about $6k

How do I know its not a torque converter? Seems I am at the mercy of the shop since I dont know. How would I best equip myself.

If youre sure you will need a new transmission why not try one of the transmission fluid additives to see if that will help with slip.

The only mechanic in my area that i trust quoted me $2500 to rebuild w/ 1 yr warranty or going with a Jasper rebuilt for $3200 w/ 3 yr warranty. This was for 4wd version.

Even if the car is only worth $6000 NADA, it may be worth replacing the transmission if you plan to keep the car a long time. I know I plan on keeping my 3rd gen forever, I absolutely love the truck and to me $2500 is a small price to pay to continue driving it. It is all relative to what it is worth to you.
 
Thanks. You reminded me of something I forgot. I did add an additive and it didnt do any good. There was no change. I do plan on keeping it for awhile. I would be hard pressed to find another vehicle thats dependable for what I would be able to sell the 4runner for.

Anyways is it better to go through a mechanic or find a transmission online? Where would I go online to fond one (not a pick n pull)? Is Jasper a company that distributes trnamsissions? Thanks!
 
Transfer case lever didn't get bumped to neutral did it? I have never heard of one of these transmissions just dying with no previous noises or symptoms.

Edit: realized you said it moves when cold so transfer case must be engaged. Still don't believe there were no symptoms....

Almost like 99% drop your pan do a line flush and change your filter ... It's completely clogged up with clutch pack... Drop it in the wrong gear by accident ? Or is your radiator bad like mine ? Explanaion to it barely pulling cold is that sediment drops off the filter until the pump pumps it back up and clogs the filter which in return starves the transmission because a pump can't pump fluid past a brick wall which is essentially what your filter is right now ... Trans is screwed btw maybe 1000 miles maybe 100000 miles for $100 filter and fluid my method is the best shot you got . Let me know if I'm right please

There were small signs but nothing pointing to an all out failure. The 4runner would jerk alittle from a stop at a light to putting my foot on the gas to go. Thats all I can remember. I havent dropped the pan but the filter getting clogged up makes sense. So since I am not the most mechanicaly inclined I want to ensure I am understanding.

I have tried in all gears (in and out of 4x4), so I am pretty sure its not out gear in the tranfer case.

I will seeif I can get mechanic friend to assist with this next one. I should start by dropping the pan, line flush, to see if there is anything clogging things up, change the filter.

After that if there are no clear indications that its the transmission, should I replace the radiator? There were suggestions by Jiffy Lube to flush but for the most part that looked good.

I really appreciate the help. I will keep you informed of my progress. Thanks.
 
2000 Toyota SR5 4 runner tranny problems

Can anyone tell me how difficult it might be to drop the pan on my vehicle (2000 SR5 4x4)? Not home right now to look at it. Is there anthing that has to be removed like part of the exhaust? Dont know many mechanics and I am trying to take care of this issue sooner rather than later. Going to try and pick up a Chilton book after work.
 
No a bunch of 10 mm bolts and the dipstick is 2 piece but if it won't come loose a 14 on the side of the block passenger side ?
 
I have looked into transmissions lately and found several shops that would do complete rebuilds with 2yr/24k mile warrants for $2200-$2500. I also found you can buy a remanufactured one from advanced auto for $1700 or a beefed up one from ITP transmissions for $3400.

The cost of a BRAND NEW transmission from an official Toyota dealer (CamelBack Toyota of AZ) is only $1700 (4WD) after you return the core. Free shipping and no tax BTW.

So you put the total of $2,684 on your VISA card, pay a local Toyota certified shop to swap the transmissions out. You pay $150 (or whatever) to ship the core back to AZ. With the $1000 core credit minus the shipping you are looking at $1800 - $1850 cost plus maybe $200 to do the swap. So lets call it an even $2000.

I would much much rather have a brand new Toyota transmission than a rebuild. Rebuilds rarely last 5 years and many break again within 18 months.

BTW, my 97 transmission is still going strong with no slippage (knock on wood)!

Before we start talking big dollars i would talk to a reputable transmission shop in your neighborhood. see what they say if they seem optimistic about working on it call another shop untill you hear a couple more opinions then settle on your gut feeling on who would give you the best service.

I agree with where you're going, but where are you going to find a toyota certified shop to put a trans in a 4x4 for $200? At my store, that's barely 1.5hrs of labor.
 
Wow thats alot of info. Thats great. I appreciate all the help. Knowing more about the cost of the transmission helps in knowing what I might be up against. There were a couple of opinions that it might not be transmission mainly because there were no discernable signs, all gears out at once and gears will engage for the first 5-10 minutes after which nothing. What eles could it be? Torque Converter?
 
Once again did you check the filter ? That's exactly what mine was . , why ask a question and not try a possible 100 dollar solution
 
I remember the suggestion about the filter. Havent been able to get to that just yet. Having mechanic friend agree to assist. Will check filter today.
