2001 4runner transmission problem.

so i have discovered recently that my 01 4runner A340F transmission has been acting up lately. when im driving it just does not want to shift unless i let go of the gas. it will just keep climbing and screaming rpms. loss of power has followed and burning really lean the smell from the exhaust is wayyyy too strong. it will also down shift while going up a hill and start at about 5k rpms when shifts down. when i go wheeling i can barley climb a hill cause of the power lost. if anyone has any answers or has come across this issue before please any help would be great. tired of my yota drinking gas like its water right now. thanks in advance.

Check the downshift cable on the throttle body.

Mine was quite slack as well as my cruise control and throttle.

My cruise control had actually slipped out of it's slot. If your transmission cable is too slack, out of position or broken all sorts of strange things can occur.

May not address your situation exactly but if I had the T4R in front of me this is the first thing I would look at...after checking the ATF level and quality that I assume you have already done...right?

just got informed 01-02 are drive by wire no cables...... so whats this mean?

It means Toyota switched from the mechanical throttle body to the "new" electric throttle body.

The older ones control the throttle by the gas pedal, to a cable that pull on the linkage on your throttle body to open and close the throttle valve.

The newer type "drive by wire" is all electrical, no physical connection between the gas pedal and throttle body. The ECU and a bunch of sensors control it. Not sure how it works because I don't care for it lol.

got told my wheel speed sensors could be the cause i replaced them all 4 at the hubs and now my speedometer and odometer will not work.....
