2001 SR5 4WD - Is the transmission dead?

I know you've already gotten rid of it, but I'd really question if the dealership actually did the transmission service 6 months ago. I have heard problems regarding the 01-02 autos (planetary gears), but the only cases I've heard are people who have towed heavy trailers or wheeled it hard. Well, I guess you've already made your choice and with a new car now. Good luck with the new ride.

I am with you and since I have been using them from 1st service - who knows how many of 5 transmission services I paid for actually happened. Lesson learnt and I'll be checking the fluid colors after service in future (although I think transmissions on the newer models don't need servicing).

Now the really odd one !

Hi All

My 2001 SR5 4WD (80,000 miles) started showing the following symptoms: High pitched whining noise when in Drive (forward or reverse) (this sound does not occur in Park or Neutral). Also some clunking noise when Reverse is engaged from Park. Also note for about six months, truck would not move right after pressing the gas when Reverse was engaged (about a second delay before vehicle started moving).

This is odd - I am still waiting to take delivery of the new vehicle. But all of a sudden the symptoms disappear - no more loud whining when driving. Clunking noise when engaging reverse not prominent. Still have the issue with cold start - vehicle does not begin moving right away - takes some extra gas / delay.

It almost looks like some contaminant (metal filing) was struck and got released? Need to look more carefully to see if there is still any odd noises.

It is probably academic at this time but I figured this could be of interest.

Transmission compatibility

Can I put a 2004 sequoia trans into my 01 4runner?? Does anyone know what is all compatible?

The 'front' of the transmission (at least) is not compatible. Bellhousing, torque converter, pump, etc. Not sure if it uses a cable or solenoid for line pressure.

Just out of curiosity, where are you ordering it from? I don't need one, but in the unfortunate event that I do, I'd like to at least be aware of reputable sources to order one from.

I believe he Said in another post he was ordering a toyota remained one.

I have also believed I seen somewhere that only late model 3rd gen are still available via remfg. The early 96 to 99 Maybe discontinued..

That's correct - ordered from a dealer (friend works there gets some discount). Toyota said the '01-02s are going to be discontinued soon yet still available via backorder with a wait of 2-3 months (that was about a month ago yet seems so much longer now).

I think I saw it on a thread on here about the earlier years. Being they will discontinuing the 01 and 02 soon as well pretty much sadly confirms it.

I'll pull a used 97 trans from a yard and keep it as a back up/rebuild it (must check any metal shavings in the pan before pulling it).

Looks like 3/96 to 8/99 are all same: Part number for these years: 350003D550

It's bound to happen. Folks can always I guess get Jasper 's when toyota quits. Actually they already did for the early years. I see if I can pull some if I come across them in the pick and pulls. As I belive the 2 wd and 4wd are the same transmission except different output sections that can be changed correct?
