2001 SR5 Gas smell suggestions

Have gas smell coming from under rear of 4runner in area near charcoal canister, no codes, no visual leaks. Thought Cap was making odd noise like burping. Replaced cap with OEM, no luck. Should I try vent solenoid or just replace canister. Is the Dorman ok? 257.00 at rockauto vs minimum of 369.00 OEM

Why are you playing parts swap. vent solenoid has nothing to do with gas smell. a leak will cause a gas smell. If you have a leak you will have a code for a leak. you will have to smoke the gas tank to check for a leak. the system will throw a code for a leak pretty quickly. check for codes, don't expect the check engine light to come on.

summery don't throw expensive parts unless you are 100% sure that is the cause.

edit don't every buy dorman, things like this go oem.

Why part swap

Why part swap? well for 400 I can replace the canister with a dorman canister, replace the vent solenoid and rebuild the top of the gas tank. The dealer wants 110.00 for smoke test, 300.00 to pull gas tank plus parts if it's up there. Don't even want to talk about their price on canister.

But thanks for the suggestion on the vent solenoid.

On the tank suggestion

I've read the threads that many people had issues with the tank but the smell is coming from the canister. May be cracked, not sure, do not see any signs of wetness on any of the lines or the box but that is where the smell comes from. nothing near the tank.
