2001 T4R 100K Miles maintenance

Hi all,

I have a 2001 T4R, with 100K miles on it. I took the car into the dealer for the 100,000 Mile maintenance.

They're gonna do the following:

• Oil Change
• Replace Coolant
• Tire rotation

That seems fine to me.

Then they called back and said they see corrosion on the outside of the water pump, so they suggested the following ($1200):

• Replace the Water Pump
• Replace all Belts
• Including the Timing Belt

They said they see signs of leaking on the transfer case, so they suggested the following ($1900):

• Replace the seals on the transfer case.

I'm pretty much a luddite when it comes to cars, so I would appreciate your input. Is this stuff important to do? Should I go through with it?

If the timing belt/water pump has never been replaced before, do it. In addition I'd ask them about replacing the tensioner, crank bolt and crank oil seal.

Crawl under the 4runner and see if you spot any leaks from the transfer case. Unless it is leaking like a sieve, I'd forgo such at the moment unless you have the cash to replace them.

High auto repair prices are the norm in DC.

1900 to replace the xfer case seal? hahaha

Couldn't you get a fully rebuilt one for less?

I'd find another dealer or independent shop. $1200 for a timing belt job? That's almost $500 more than my dealer charges. As far as the transfer case,I concur with mxer. Get under there and check yourself. A lot of the maintenance required on these vehicles is not hard,a timing belt may be out of your reach right now,but checking fluid levels and such should be cake. You're gonna be at the mercy of the dealer/indie shop if you don't.

second the post about replacing the crankshaft bolt. Cheap insurance for a cheap price. I would also do radiator hoses. I agree that the cost is too high. Look on line for other dealers coupon specials. I have seen timing belts for 400-500 via coupon. The water pump should add about 100 more since all the labor is in timing belt cost

You also should consider a new radiator and hoses from the transmission. Search for pink milkshake.

That's twice what I paid for for the exact same work on pump, timing, and the 3 belts here in a ut dealership. Call another dealership and see what they will charge. That seems steep.
