Newbie here looking for some advice. just recently bought a 2001 sr5 with 115k on craigslist. got a really good deal on it and now found out why. went to the mechanic at goodyear before buying it and he said everything looked good. now a couple hundred miles after owning it there was a huge tranny leak. havent taken it to the shop yet but my geuss is that its serious. just asking for some advice. if i replace the tranny or fix it should i still get max life on the vechicle assuming the mechanic did a good job? i am wondering if its worth putting the work into the runner with 115k. i really like the vechicle but dont want it to be a constant source of problems and a money pit. also if i do go ahead and get it fixed. is there any extra procautions i can take any extra mods to get max life out of this runner?

Tell us more - 2WD or 4WD? how much did you pay? Overall condition?
115K is low-mileage for a 2001 4Runner. I would guess you could rebuild the transmission for around $1500 (based on a quote I got a while back). That's worst-case. It might be something much less serious. If you got a good deal and the rest of the truck is good, it easily has another 100K miles in it.
Basic maintenance at 115K would be timing belt and water pump, new fan belts - about $400 for that (Toyota recommends that at 90K - you can see if it was done at a Toyota dealer by registering and entering the VIN at toyota.com/owners, it might also show up on a carfax). Lower ball joints would be a good idea - probably $300 installed, but there was a recall on them so it's probably been done or Toyota will still do it for free - that will show up on the Toyota owner's website as well. Other than that there isn't much these need at 115K.

115k and it is in excellent condition. no rust. no fadding paint (big because i bought in hawaii) and inside is just as clean as the outside. its a 2wd. got it off craigslist for 6,000. which is extremely low once again because im on an island where everyone wants a toyota. i plan on fixing it up from the inside out. once the transmission is fixed i read on here it would be a good idea to get a different radiator to keep the transmission cooler since im in a hot climate. i read a koyo was the best. any suggestions on this? and any more suggestions to have the truck running as long as possible?

Koyo or a TYC will get the cooling job done right
