2002 4 Runner - Maintenance Question

In final stages of purchasing a 2002 4 Runner for my son. The specific car I am looking at has 73,000 miles and was purchased by 2nd owner in August of 2006 as Certified Pre-Owned from local Toyota Dealer with 44k miles.

If anytone can pass along maintenance items to look at or be concerned about. I am planning to have a pre-purchase inspection completed by competent independent Toyota mechanic this week. The 60K major service has been done.

Specific Questions:

When should timing belt/chain be changed

When should automatic transmission fluid be changed

Timing belt is 90k, water pump should be done at the same time. Tranny fluid should be 30k, should have been done as part of 60k along w/ spark plugs, diffs, xfer case, coolant, pcv and air filter. Belts should be fine, front brakes may need work soon. Shocks can go longer but 70-80k is a good time to change out. There was a ball joint recall so see about that, may not be on the model you are looking at. Anything else I may suggest should be caught by your mechanic.

Unless there's an obvious reason not to do it I like to start with a new battery. It's simple, cheap and can go a long way to prevent trouble. In warmer climates old batteries seem to just quit with little warning.

Other than that I think Pat161 nailed it.
