2002 4 runner motor swap question

i have a 2002 4runner that i bought from the junk yard with a clean title. the truck only has 146k miles and was hit in the front. i took it to the body shop and had it fixed and after getting it all pretty and back together just to find out that the head gasket was blown. lol. I found a tacoma in the same junk yard that is a 2000 and bought the truck cheap and it runs great. this one was rolled over. i'm wanting to just swap the motor out. as i was taking one apart yesterday i ran across a issue. and my question is where does the wiring harness un plug. i took the 2 10mm off the fire wall but didn't see a place to disconnect the wires. any help on this and i would be greatfully thankful.

it unplugs from the ecm behind the glove box.


If I was doing the swap, I would leave the wiring in place as you will need it for the taco engine. The Throttle body is different and wiring to is different between the two motors.

I would use the tacoma long block and keep the throttle body and other accessories from the 4runner just to keep things original and not have issues. The difference in throttle bodies also causes a difference in the cruise control function etc. The more you keep from original vehicle, the more plug and play it will be.

If your gonna swap motors I'd go for the turbo diesel. That's just me though.

i was looking at it this morning and noticed that the wiring was a little different. so if i just change the intakes i should be good?

I won't pretend to know every year by year vehicle by vehicle change for the 5vzfe engine, but I think the majority of them would be solved by just changing over the throttle body and harness from the original 4runner pieces. Just inspect the rest of the pieces once you have both engines out to see what if anything else is different.

if you have them both next to each other and just go through all the connectors and switch out anything needed thats different. shouldn't be any problem or hassle really. i've changed plenty of corolla/prizm motors with slight differences and dealt with plenty of this, there shouldn't be anything a few more bolts wont take care of to have it running 100%. :cheers:

yea they look very similar. gonna change the intake's and go from there. i got it about 90% out of the 4runner. had a birthday party with lots of children so i was limited to time in the shop today. will continue the project again this coming weekend hopefully... lol thanks for the help guys.
