2002 4runner correct toyota radiator cap

Looking for toyota original radiator cap for my 2002 4runner limited.

It's the pressure I am confused about.

The original on my 4runner notes 108 kPa and most I see is 88 kPa.

Please provide a toyota oem part number.

Maybe 2002 is an odd year:

Is what's listed for every other 3rd gen. Of course, there are 4 other caps the superseded this one, so perhaps the original was different.

Says it fits the 2002 (and overlaps with the above for the 2001 and 2000). I honestly wouldn't concern myself with the pressure ratings, the difference between 88 and 108kpa is a whopping 8 degrees difference in boiling point at 50:50 mix (10 degree for pure, plain water).


So you can work this out yourself in the future, head over to Toyota Parts and Accessories - Official Online Store , put in your vin and then search the part you want. If you put in your zipcode, it'll give you the closest dealer options (with online ordering) and list pricing. It's very simple to use to find most common parts, more cumbersome if you're looking for a specific nut or bolt. In that case you should try Toyota parts catalog and again enter your vin. Same info, though not always with the most current part numbers, different format that may work better if you like to search visually.

Good to know how to help yourself, you never know when someone might be talking out their butt and give you wrong info... or there's just no one around to spoon-feed you whatever info you're looking for.
 
Should be a 108kpa cap, Toyota really has not changed their radiator cap pressures for their steel caps in forever; they were 108kpa for the "wide" style mouths and 108kpa for the modern "smaller" cap design.

The original cap for a 2002 4Runner comes up as 16401-62100, which does show it as a 88kpa specification (can't say I have ever seen one in the wild with such a low rating, but I usually replace them when doing timing belt services and cooling system related services out of habit and caution, so I may have never noticed?). Though it does seem that you can substitute it with 16401-31520, which is basically the cap we use on everything and has a rating of 108kpa.

I am going to take a guess and say that the original part was superseded by the new one and the 108kpa is fine to use. I use Please Wait... | Cloudflare to verify part numbers, they aren't always super clear about their "Substitutions" vs. Supersessions (to be fair, I have noticed a lot of the online websites don't clearly list or direct you when a part has been superseded like the factory parts fiche does) but I have found them to be very accurate in their diagrams, part numbers, and VIN filtering. So I use them all the time when I am not at work and can annoy my parts department.

But call up a dealer and have them verify what the correct part number is, my guess is that it will have been superseded with the 16401-31520 cap.
 
Well I did order this radiator cap from Toyota 16401-36020 which is what it call for my 2002 4runner. I am finally going to replace my original radiator and cap before I get my milkshake. I also just checked the original front lower ball joint and it did not move at all, so keeping them for now. Thanks for all your help.

The spec for lower ball joint play is 0.5mm. I doubt you could see that with the naked eye or feel that. There's a special procedure to check it and it requires a dial indicator. General rule for OEM lower ball joints is 100k miles/10 years.

This was my 91 year old dad's 4runner, which he passed away, and I have maintained it since new. They put only 5k miles per year and it was mainly used on the highway back and forth from their shore house also garaged and never used in the snow.

I believe if there was some movement I would of noticed it. Also we have yearly inspections here in PA. My first concern is replacing the original radiator so I don't loose the transmission.

Just trying to point out another common failure point for 3rd gen 4Runners that when it does fail causes a lot of damage. Most people don’t even notice anything different before it fails either.
