Hey guys! I have a 4runner that got a CEL about a month ago. Truck runs great. Has a new maf, wp, tb, plugs, etc. it's been well cared for and isn't rusty. 217k miles. Scanned it and had p0440 and p0442 codes. I took it to my dad's employee's friend who is a mechanic but doesn't speak much English. He did rotors, pads, a new ac compressor and supposedly fixed the evap leak for a great price. Unfortunately about a week or so later, the codes came back. He's a good drive away and I really don't have the time to take it back for him to try and figure it out. For the price I paid, the other work was well worth the money. I'm just curious what the most likely culprit is. It seems a gas cap will only do the p0440 and I get no fuel smell or fuel leaks at all. So I'm guessing it's not my fuel filler neck. Problem is, I found a steal on a project I'd like to pick up so I want to get this fixed and put her up for sale. Any advice as far as how to go about fixing this? Thank you in advance! Any advice is appreciated. Also, I did search but it seems most people either got the p0446 or just the p0440. I couldn't find much on just the two codes I've got and no fuel smell.

the evap canister above the spare and the check valve on the tank are the culprits to these codes. replace these and codes will be no more, at least it has been for me. evap canister is pricey but comes with everything; valves, hoses, etc. check valve is on top of tank and requires dropping it. replace the grommet and all other gaskets while there; sending unt/fuel pump gasket, cutoff valve gasket, fuel filler neck hose. i just did the tank 2 weeks ago and code is gone as well as the gas smell associated with the leak. the top of the valve cracks and causes the issues. 01-02 are the same.

This is coming from experience on only my 4runner but I have a feeling it'll be the check valve on top of the gas tank, especially since you have an 02. If you have the time, there are steps in the fsm that show you how to test the check valve & charcoal canister.
Changing the check valve is cheaper but takes more work but not difficult. Changing the charcoal canister is easier to do but much more expensive. I'd be hesitant to get a used canister because you don't really know how functional it is or how much life it has left.

I referenced a few of his videos before I fixed mine. He does a great job with fix it vids. His 4runner one wasn't available at the time I was working on mine, would have been nice though.
Thanks, all of you, for the help! Do you happen to have a link to the FSM? I may just sell as-is cause I want to get this other car but I'd sure like to fix it if I can do it myself in not too much time.

Here's the fsm link but a lot of the sections in it are blank because the site that was hosting it expired (or something like that). I think the evap troubleshooting section is empty also but I saved those pages in this thread, it's post #8 P0440 fixed.

Hey this was all very helpful to me. Sons 4runner had multiple codes, two of which were the p0442 and p0440 codes... after a little sniffing.... I was pretty sure it was a cracked roll over valve. I was able to find the valve and gasket and did the job in about 2.5 hrs, thanks to the help in this thread. Also I did not find it necessary to drop the drive shaft, but I did remove the spare tire. FYI... and thanks for the great help to all on this forum...

That’s what worked for me...so far. 3 weeks into a new rear sensor and no codes. Long road trip coming up so fingers crossed.
