2002 4Runner PO442 Code

Ok,

I know that there are a slew of problems that the PO442 Code could be generated from. It seems like I get this code every couple of years, and I cannot remember what I did to fix the problem before. I am getting old and need to log it.

In order - what would you check first? I don't have a smoke machine. I have not dropped the gas tank to see if the issue is there.

The 4Runner has 185k miles and is in great shape.

Check the gas cap( if the gasket is old replace it) and the evap hoses first. Then the purge valve and charcoal canister, fuel neck check valve etc.

Any symptoms? I just dropped my tank and replaced the overflow check valve / gasket, and the 3 fuel lines in the general area of the check valve. The fuel lines were not budging so we cut them. My symptoms with P0442 were CEL light and fuel gas smell near rear driver's tire after driving. I did not see anything wrong with the old check valve when I pulled it out. The gasket had some small cracks but I also did not think it was bad. Knock on wood, I do not smell fuel anymore, so I'm assuming the gasket was the issue.

I know a non-sealing gas cap can cause that code. That is the cheapest first attempt you can make.

You can check the condition of the rubber tank filler hose too. It's had 20+ years of gasoline exposure.
