2002 with JBL radio replacement

Hey guys, going to be putting an kenwood double din in my buddies 02 runner.

He has the oem jbl labeled 6 disc changer right now. Doing some reading, it seems the 03 with the jbl synthesis system require a special harness but I can't find any info on the 02.

Am I correct in assuming as the 02 is not the synthesis system, the standard harness that would be used for all the other 96-02's will be correct?

Take out the OEM deck. Behind the deck there should be a silver box with heatsinks, that is the OEM amplifier. Unplug said amplifier and then use standard 4runner metra harness to plug into the harness you unplugged from the amplifier - effectively bypassing it.

This is the 6 disc changer my '02 had. I did exactly what Jhelms said. I don't think this is the same disc changer you're talking about though because mine doesn't say JBL anywhere on it.

But as long as your buddy's rig doesn't have weird JBL speakers you should be fine doing what was suggested.

I do know however that later models such as our '05 sequoia with the JBL system had funny 2ohm JBL speakers that won't work with anything other than factory amp. So make sure that's not your situation. For those vehicles, metra makes the TYTO-01 adapter. I used it for about a year with mixed results, but something in the system started acting up and I couldn't tell if it was the adapter or the amp so I just bypassed all of it and replaced the speakers.

There is a wire harness that utilizes the OEM amplifier. I would think the amp inside a quality deck would be just as good or better, but it's another option.

Any shot you still have this and willing to sell? Thanks! Been looking for one and might head to pick n pull just to find the A56811 model. I also know this thread is way old ahah
