2003 4runner 4wd problems

Wrong, stop and put it in neutral then engage 4WD.

That only applies to low range. For hi-range 4wd mine will only engage if I am moving. Maybe I don't have enough patience to wait for it but it always engages quickly if I am going about 10-20 mph.

I've been in 4Hi for the last couple months. tried 4Lo this morning after a quick Lab test, Neutral, 4Lo, tried packing out of the parking space, all beeps. back to 4Hi and got in a straight line, still would not engage. will look into this after a quick breakfast.

Any luck? I just bought an 06 Sport with this issue. I work at a dealership, they've already replaced the front actuator, that didn't fix it. The actuator for the transfer case has been on back order, it finally arrived today. They'll start on it tomorrow, it's probably a 2 day job so I'm not expecting to know if that's the fix until Monday. As much as it costs it better be. They said it always ends up being the actuators.

Where can I find this vsc thing you speak of

If you're outside your truck, looking at it head on, there's a reservoir on the right side of the engine bay, closest to the firewall. There should be a grey plug connected to it. Pull that, and then try. Regardless of if it works or not, plug it back in after. If it works after pulling, it's the VSC system, if it doesn't, it's something else.

Ok New updates put the runner on a lift and placed the 4wd switch in 4hi I turned the front shaft by hand 1/4 maybe and something clicked in the transfer case turned the front axles by hand and there still free, cranked it and checked in drive still nothing. Removed the add box and slide the ring and turned the front wheels and they locked in, bench tested the box and it works checked my voltages on the plug for the add box on the truck while it was running and some one changing from 2to 4hi and my voltages never change hook the box up without putting it back in the diff and flip the switch no movement plug voltages are red10.9 [email protected] w1.9 [email protected] p@b0 letters indicating wire color. I left the runner in 4wd for now and my lights have changed vac is out but 4wd and locker lights are now rapid flashing I'm thinking this means the 4wd computer is shot does that make since to anyone else or what's your thoughts

Ive ruled out the actuators some where between me turning the switch and the actuators im not sending a signal because the plug to my actuators the voltage never changes when the switch is turned

Does anybody see why I shouldnt leave it in 4wd until I get the votage issue figured out this is my daily driver and the way im thinking is the v8 models are full time 4wd so this shouldnt hurt right

I have a v6 with part time 4wd. When I put it into 4hi I have 4wd but the 4wd and the center diff lock lights flash. Everything seemed to be working normally except for the lights. I was on a little back road today driving slow in 4hi and out of nowhere my front wheels locked up and I slid to a stop. I finally got it unhung and back to 2wd to get it home, but if the lights are flashing don't mess with it. If that would have happened on the interstate I could have been killed.

4wd doesn't work

Hello, I just got a 2003 v8 limited and the found out the 4wd doesn't engage. Can anybody point me to the right thread on how to solve this problem?

Chances are that your actuator is bad
On the v8 it's a pretty in-depth job and $ of actuator itself is expensive
Best of luck

So did somebody come up with the solution to this issue?

Lost 4wd last month, and a buddy has the same issue.

it full time 4wd v8 model, yet I bought it from a guy who didn't tell me it is only working in 2wd, so it must be the actuator. you have to take out transfer case to replace it. The other models are easy to replace the motor. This one has clips on the actuator rods. So I am not in the mkt for dropping the t-case. might be out of luck unless I can tap on it or something?

Since mine is the v8 also with full.time 4wd
I installed a switch to trick the computer into thinking its locked
That in turn turns off the vsc trac
Too.much $$$ to fix
Best of luck

My '05 V6 T4R is being a real *****, could use some assistance and you seem to have helpful advice. Got stuck in 4Lo, the 4wd light started flashing when out on the trails. When I try to shift out of 4lo it starts beeping. Shop has replaced two t-case actuators, thinking 1st one might be bad, didn't fix issue. Tried replacing front ADD actuator, no fix. Could it be the 4wd ECU? Appreciate any help you might have!!

Like I said, it could be either a failed actuator and/or a failed switch. Unfortunately some of the limit switches are not in fact servicable and thus may require replacement of an entire actuator (I believe this is the case with the transfers case actuator, I can't remember because some of the newer ones like the New Tacomas have replacable switches.)

Here's a "Quick Training Guide" from TIS on the '03-'09 T4R 1GR-FE 4WD system and what testing would look like:
View attachment 94231

So if you did manage to do an actuator test of the system, your screen should have shown a data list of the following switches with on/off indications when you tested the actuator:

~TL1
~TL2
~TL3
~DL1
~DL2
~ADD

The system uses a combination of On/Off switches to know what position it is in currently, what position it wants, and if it in fact shifted into that position. A failure of any one or more switches can cause the ADD or Transfer Case Actuator to not even engage.

Hello, I am having trouble with my 4th Gen 4 runner not engaging into 4Hi.

When I switch into 4Hi, the indicator lights start flashing but nothing happens and the 4wd does not engage. When I switch it back into 2wd it makes a horrible grinding noise like missing a shift in a manual transmission and then the indicator lights turn off.

This has happened the last two times I have tried to use 4Hi and now there is a metallic rubbing noise while I am driving. Does anybody know what could be causing that rubbing noise?
