2003 4Runner HID Retrofit in progress...

Hey brian, i should be receiving one headlight and a set of audi a6 projectors next week. i'm going to try to start the retrofit in the spare headlamp, but won't be moving nearly as fast as you did because i'm a student and will only be doing this on my spare time. do you have any tips or advice for me? specifically....opening the housings, aiming the projectors....etc. thanks!

Yeah, I can definitely help you out. I will write some things here tomorrow for you and I can also try to put some things in a word document and email it to you if you would like. Glad someone else is doin it, its a great project...this is the only reason why i cant wait for the weather to warm up so i can finish it already...haha...its about 5 degrees right now

has it come out yet? last i heard over at HIDplanet.com was that it wasn't released yet. well i already got a6 projectors anyways, thanks for the heads up. i think they're going to be pretty expensive also because the hella 90mm projectors that accept D2S bulbs are $500 a pair. yikes!

The way I got my projectors was to search for single complete headlights on ebay. You can get good deals that way....i got each headlight for $100...so $200 for two acura tsx projectors....ebay is good for a project like this but you have to be patients sometimes with it.

Just wanted to give a little update ( Feb. 20) I have both of my new ballasts done...all i have left to do is just install the lights on the truck and get the alignment right...its been gettin a little warmer so i will finally have a chance to get outside to finish up...should be soon...then i will have final pics and a writeup available for all to see.

so, I'm deciding which projectors to buy. It seems that I should go for the bigger one since our 4Runner's headlight assemby is quite large. I took a look at vortec's HID retrofit and he's using the bmw HID projectors which seem bigger and fit better in the headlight assembly.

smaller ones are easier to retrofit, but bigger ones are possible. with smaller ones , you don't have to cut as much, and you have more room to work around them. the bmw's vortec used are perfectly fine, except that they're bi-xenons and you don't need the high-beam function because our housing has high beams. i bought myself a set of a6 low-beams, and i'm waiting for it to get warmer here so i can take apart my housings.

You can use any size you want but you have to be careful with the amount of room available. The housings are big but you cannot have the projector stick that far out the rear. The passenger side has more room than the driver side with the battery there. That is where you will run into problems. Bigger projectors might stick out the back too much. I used Acura TSX Projectors because they are pretty compact and I knew they are decent projectors. Even with my TSX projectors which are fairly small in comparison with others are close to hitting the battery with the bulb and plug hooked up, They just make it really with only and inch or two to spare. I would recommend choosing a projector you know fits like I am using or Vortec or TranceKrayz. I know for a fact that Vortec had to move his battery back a little bit for fitment, but the bi-xenon projectors he used are pretty big. Good luck

I just wanted to post an update...I will have my headlights back together within the next couple of days then should be able to put them back in the truck. All I can say is aligning the projectors isnt the easiest task but I got them fairly close, I am sure they arent perfect but what can you do...I will post more info and pics hopefully by early next week.
