2003 4runner timing belt

Hey Guys,

A friend asked me to help him replace his TB on his 2003 ltd V8. I've done a few TB jobs on other cars, have the tools and the ability to research the job. That's why I'm here!

1. Do you guys know where I can source the factory service manual?
2. Are there any specialty tools needed for the job?
3. What other items are wise to replace during the TB job (water pump, thermo, belts, etc)?
4. What TB kits are suggested and which ones are to be avoided?
5. Are there any snafoos that often pop up in a TB job on the 4runner? Broken apron clips, bolts that commonly break, etc.
6. What is the approximate time to complete the job?
7. Are there any good online videos or DIY threads that outline the job?
8. Anything else???

I'd like to have everything lined up and on hand to avoid unexpected delays.

All help is appreciated.

I also have a word.doc that is basically a printable, step-by-step for reference during the job. I printed it off and kept it handy. I don't think it attached to my write up, so PM me your email if you'd like for me to send it to you.

No big surprises, but as zopperman said, give it a full day. I did mine on a Saturday, but made sure my Sunday was clear too just in case.

It has a parts list I used with part numbers as well as pictures and a copy of the FSM for the timing belt replacement.
2.) I mention one or two tools that you should have to make life easier (not really Toyota specific)
3.) I mention in the thread what parts I did replace on my vehicle and what I recommend at that time
4.) Look for "Timing Belt Kits" made by reputable companies and/or that use Denso brand or Toyota "Red Box" parts
5.) Usually some of the plastic retaining clips for the cosmetic panels on the engine bay and fenders can break from age/brittleness but if you're careful usually its pretty straight forward with no issues.
6.) I believe its about 5+hrs flat rate with the water pump included, doing it at home is usually double shop time at minimum.
7.) Posted a link to the thread I made and some others were posted as well
8.) If they have 90k+ throw some new Iridium Spark Plugs in and maybe go ahead and do the transmission fluid as well (it will most likely be Type IV ATF since the '03's had a non-sealed transmission with a dipstick. Just pull the Dipstick out, on the end near the "Full" mark it should say what spec it takes.)
