2003 SR5 brake upgrade advice

Looking to replace/upgrade my brakes , bought the truck and it pulsates while stopping. Likely the rotors. Did some research and figured that since I have an SR5, I have 319mm(smaller) rotors. I occasionally tow a 5000lb boat. That said can I just upgrade to the larger rotors 326mm and pads? Keeping the current backing plates and calipers?? Probably not but it would be better knowing before ordering.

This is in my plans for this fall, I will be getting Centric reman calipers from RockAuto, 338mm with the Powerstop Severe Duty/Truck rotors and pads.. probably from RockAuto as well. Not sure if you can just install the larger caliper but I think I read someplace that its a direct swap? And make sure your wheels will fit, if you have 16's they don't fit over the calipers.

I have Powerstop Z36 Truck and Tow installed on my son's 4Runner and on my GX470. Very happy with both!

Make sure to bed them properly.

Since you have an SR5 you probably have 16" wheels. I think if you get the larger rotor and calipers you will also need the 17" wheels.

You are correct - base SR5 sits on 16 inch wheels and has 319 mm rotors. :rockon:

So to upgrade to a larger 338 mm brake kit you will need larger calipers and, at a minimum, 17 inch wheels. Larger calipers are a direct bolt-on replacement for the stock ones.

My SR5 sits on 17 inch wheels, so I only had to buy larger calipers.

Brake power difference, comparing to stock brakes, is very notable. I would recommend doing both front and rear at once - I can definitely feel the difference between 4Runner with front upgrade only and GX with both front and rear. (That statement is a result of a real road conditions testing utilizing SoMP.)

Thanks for the info,I already have 17" TRD FJ wheels so,my plan of attack will be, front calipers,with power slot Z36 kit with SS lines first,then Ill do the rear when funds are avail.

inadequate braking 2006 T4R SE

My brakes arent pulsing but I can definitely tell that they arent as good at braking as some vehicles Ive had. Im thinking of doing a similar upgrade soon as I will be pulling a boat or a camper sometimes. Do you think you could do a short write up with a few pics of the install? I already have 20" wheels so I dont have to worry about clearance. Just interested in how easy it will be and if its something I can tackle after work one day in about 4 hours or if I will have to make a Saturday of it.

Edit: Apparently my Sport Edition already comes with the 338mm rotors. Thats saves me from having to buy calipers which wouldve made the cost for a kit with all 4 around 600$. Hopefully I can just go with the drilled and slotted rotors, carbon fiber pads, and bleed everything and see a significant difference.

After some research Ive gone ahead and ordered the 06 Tundra PowerTech Z36 338mm kit with calipers and SS lines. Ill post up how it comes out.
