2003 Supercharged V8 Next Week

Since my 4runner is still at the dealer, I'll have to wait till monday to talk to them. They did get the idle to smoothen out when they sprayed carb cleaner in that area, but maybe some of it is getting to the area where the leak may actually be. I didn't realize you could get a leak in the main unit itself, but anythings possible.
The idle isn't really bad, just not as smooth as stock.

As for the sc whine, mines a little louder than a power steering pump, but similar.
 
I had purchased a set of IK22 to replace the OEM IK20 and handed them over to the tech to install the same day. I've done lots of modifications to the TRD SC on my corolla and I'm hoping the results on each modification I did on my corolla will work on the 4Runner, however with that being said it really does mean I know anything about the 4Runner's SC so I'm sure I'll take up your offer many times. In fact if you could pm me on some little tips I'd appreciate it.

I'm talking with Brian at URD Racing to install and tune the additional injector or is it two for the V8? I see two plugs which I assume is two, but if anyone can verify that would be swell. I remember the fuel map in my Corolla being incredibly rich (<10) at the start of boost, slightly normal at mid boost (10-11) and just sickly rich again at full boost (<10). We tuned with the AIC1 and eliminated all the pinging, until I fitted a CAI into the car. At that point it would only ping when it was 90+ here in SoCal which we corrected with some WI. If the 4Runner map proved to be the same, I'm sure we can correct it or at least minimize it.

I too do notice a when you romp on it from launch the transition from 1st to second is like your drivetrain feels like it is being driven by a rubber band if that makes sense. With the DBW I've notice that I get better launching if I gradually increase the throttle versus just flat out romping on it.

I do have a question, has anyone modified their Y-pipe in NA or SC'ed form?

Anyway I'll keep you all posted on any progress.

The idle at least on mine is smooth as stock. Check this out. When you see them on Monday ask them to rev it. While they are doing that make sure the arm on the actuator which controls the air bypass valve is moving. When the arm is fully extended the bypass valve is close and allows for the chamber pressure to build and wala...boost. During idle/freeway driving you actually want that valve open e.g. vacuum in the intake manifold. If the valve is closed during idle air is being routed to the SC rotors putting a load on the engine as well as the SC itself.

If the actuator fails to move it could be the vacuum lines are hooked up wrong to it, the actuator itself is bad (very unlikely since it's new), or there is a leak somewhere else in the system that is allowing boost, but leaking vacuum which is need to open back up the bypass valve. You don't happen to have a boost gauge already hooked up to the system? If you have a leak in those lines it will also cause a slight problem.

One other place you can call since most Toyota Dealers don't know and TRD won't help is Magnuson who is a direct distributor for our Eaton Roots SC.

Let us know how that goes because I'm sure some other members would be interested. The reason being is that Toyota discontinued the V8 supercharger in mid-2004 so with you having a 2005 something just isn't right... But if it turns out that you can install it, then you'll make a lot of members happy...

One of the things that will need to be changed to fit the 2005+ V8s is the engine mapping. Since the addition of VVTI changed the compression you're truck probably won't run too well with the new ECU.

Pre 2002 is single injector 2003 and up is double.
Split Second makes the controller URD uses (8 channel ignition, 2 injector).

Thanks for the pic, tips, and tech info. I didn't ever think the VSV/solenoid to the bypass valve was controlled via the TPS. On my corolla I had to completely bypass the VSV/solenoid to acheive full boost again. For some reason (which I haven't been able to have time to diagnose) my boost wouldn't go over 3psi. I assume the TRD ECU is sensing something is wrong and needs to be addressed. Unfortunately I have no CEL and with the OBDII scanner nothing comes up. The only things that remotely is odd is my Catalytic Cycle hasn't/won't complete.

Since my 5th injector on the corolla is controlled by the AIC1 I haven't had any other problems bypassing the VSV/solenoid so far.

I'll look into the Y-pipe thread since the stock design looks so horribly restricting.

Find out if your TRD ecu has a sticker on it, please. This is for anyone who has a SC also.

Sorry about the delay on the answer. My TRD ECU had no sticker on it in regards to the model or year. However I did snap a photo of the part number of the ECU itself.

Very nice install. I'm jealous. I've been thinking about boosting my truck as well, but I can't decide if I want to supercharge or rear mount a turbo. They look like they will be in the same ballpark as far as price.

Any idea how much power the S/C gave you? Do you plan on having it dynoed? I measured your 30-60 mph time at about 4.5-4.6 seconds and I'm going to see how that compares with my stock vvt-i times. How steep of an incline were you driving during the video you posted (freeway ramp 25-100 mph)? I'm just curious how much punch it really has.

I'm looking at the STS rear mounted turbo because at only 5-7 lbs of boost I can stay with the stock computer software and get more power per pound of boost than the S/C that has the parasitic power take-off from the crank. I'm estimating I should get 75-100 crank HP from the turbo as opposed to 50-75 crank HP from a S/C, this is just based on inital research, however.

I'm skeptical about the turbo because the air filter is mounted underbody and it and the turbo are exposed to the elements. Although STS states this is not a problem, and offers a one-year warranty on parts, I don't think any of them have ever driven winter time Colorado roads (dirty, muddy slush). Plus, the turbo would be an absolute no-no for anything more serious than light offroading (which isn't a huge deal because I'm mostly on-road, anyway). From what I researched turbo lag isn't a problem and with the vvt-i (more torque at low rpms) combined with a relatively small turbo I think this is a non-issue.

Well, the mystery is solved.

The tech took the top of the sc off, as there was a vacuum leak that I described, and what he found was the gasket -I'm not sure if it was the one between the upper and lower section, or another location ( I'll find out tommorrow, as they were cleaning up the 4runner and they wanted to keep it to make sure its done), but this gasket is actually black rtv silicone, and it was leaking through that area. They resealed it, put it together, and it is fine. They test drove it, etc and no cel came on.

So, keep this one in the memory banks if your units develop a vacuum leak situation. When I find out exactly which gasket it was, I'll post it here, which should be tommorrow.

As for the sts turbo, they don't make one for the 4runner- I spoke to them 2 days ago as one of my sales people was looking to put one on his GMC. With the ecu he needs to get-its not included in the price, and the intercooler, the price of the kit is 6k. Since they don't make one for the 4runner, you'll need either a custom install done, or get a tundra kit and do the mods, but then its a lot more than the trd sc. Another possibility, is the powerdyne sc, Gadget at URD has helped get a unit out for the tundras, and its on ebay. I emailed the seller, and he's looking to get one done for the 4runner. One of the plusses on the powerdyne setup, is that it bolts on, without removing the intake manifold, and goes through the throttle body. I know on my 98 f150, it was about a 3 hour job at home, much easier than the trd unit.

I'm not going to buy a kit and retrofit. A guy from STS emailed me and told me that they can custom build a kit for my truck. He referred me to a local, licensed STS turbo installer. I'm going to walk in and tell him I want it done for parts and labor plus 10-15%. If it doesn't come out to be less than $3500 I'll walk out. I'm not trying to drop $4k+ on a rear mounted turbo thats about the size of a 1.8T's turbo and no piggyback ECU. I did see the powerdyne unit on ebay, interesting...

Yes. Absolutely, but once I get it tuned. They will of course give me a baseline and the results on the same chart so I will definitely post it. Won't be until the end of summer. I have some other mods I need to finish on my corolla.

I started out on a roll on the on ramp of the freeway it was a modest incline, maybe 2-3% grade. From the video you can sense when I hit boost as the speedo started to climb. The on-ramp was Katella East to the 55 South On-Ramp in the City of Orange. I was at most 70% throttle and have yet to floor it. There is someone on cardomain that states his 0-60 time is 6.2 and 1/4 time is in the mid-14's with the SC. That I can believe now.

the turbo Kit is extremly easy to do. the only reson I didnt make one for myself was the fact I am in California and wanted something carb legal, then mod it for more power. This way if I get pulled over I am ok.

I don't think I need an intercooler. At first I was thinking about getting a small top mounted intercooler and make my scoop functional, but I realized that thing would just turn into a heat sink in the summer, or if the scoop got clogged with snow, not to mention getting the engine bay all gnarly and dirty.

All I'm looking at doing is throwing a turbo (looks like STS calls for a small Garrett turbo) in line with the magnaflow exhaust something that will produce 7 lbs max of boost. Have a electronically controlled wastegate to switch between 5-7 lbs. Everything else I plan to keep stock. The OEM ECU and fuel/timing system should be sufficient with this much boost (I read an article about a '03 chevy 4.8L they boosted to 7lbs and the stock computer did fine. I know my '05 electronics will be even better than the chevy.) The piping from the turbo up to the throttle body needs to be high quality aluminum with mandrel bends and rubber flanges to allow for a little flex, shouldn't be too hard. Finally, maybe a filter relocation kit, but since the 4Runner's floor sits so high off the ground if I could find a good high spot to mount the filter, a shield might suffice.

This is it. I want to keep it very cheap and very simple, I don't want to be making over 400 crank HP because stresses in the drivetrain become apparent. If this is something you think you can do for a relatively decent price hit me up with a quote and I might have to think about a road trip to So Cal...

eBay SC doesn't fit 2005 Manifold.
Right. From '04 to '05 they also changed the manifod cover from aluminum to plastic.

Also, for the 30-60 times I said would record earlier in this thread, I clocked about 5.8 s 30-60mph in my '05 vvt-i. This was done on a slight grade. I live south of Denver so my elevation is about 5500 feet, not sure how much that affects the time, but I'm sure its relevant.
