2003 Total ABS Replacement

Hey everyone,

Got a call from a buddy with a 2003 SR5 4Wheel V8 @ 189K miles who has had intermittent ABS issues. Now it's like a cat is being murdered under the hood. He just got a quote from a private shop for $5200 for a total unit replacement. Kbb says its a writeoff. Anyone want to weigh in? Just trying to use the power of the internet...

Possible ABS/booster pump electric motor needs to be replaced, it can also be sent off and rebuilt for around $300 to $500, you can also find a refurbished motor on eBay, some auto suppliers, etc.

He has looked in to this, if that were replaced, would there be additional other issues to whack-a-mole after that? I'm not very familiar with an abs system.

Well you described the sound as a cat being killed, so that I guess means a screeching sound, and the only thing I can think of that would make such a sound is the motor, it can stop working all together but that's usually after making screeching sounds before finally dying.

The motor is the most common failure, but usually at high mileage, another less common failure is the accumulator or it's o-ring but it doesn't make any sounds upon failure, and then the pump itself could make sounds if it fails but it not that common for it to fail.

I would suggest that he gets a mechanic's stethoscope, around $10 at most auto parts stores and pin point where the noise is coming from, if he finds the noise is coming from the motor and he replaces it or get it refurbished I think he will solve the problem and if he can remove the motor and reinstall it himself it would only cost $300 or a bit more depending who fixes the motor or if he buys another one.

The motor only has 2 screws and 2 wires to remove it....but it's may take a bit of hands contortions get removed and replace it, which can be done without removing anything else.

tough one for sure, that type of part failure is a nightmare scenario for me. knocking on wood now
