Why does it take $2000 in labor just to replace the head gasket?

94K is just plain wrong to have a HG go. I hope you get 300k miles out of it.

As a result of this thread I took it in to my mechanic of 20+ years. The coolant ph was perfect. 107K for a 03 and no record if it had been changed out before.

Man you have way too much time in your hands... go find a proof of who was trolling instead of accusing so quickly. Only time will tell and if it does become a common issue then you will only look foolish in the end.

I do hope this is not a common issue as it is a painful repair bill for anyone. Did not expect this to happen either. Let just help each other in better ways to deal with this problem and find ways to reduce the cost of the repair. Maybe having an insurance when you are close to the mileage, might not be a bad idea.

I agree 94K is not very good. Sorry for that, I hope the new HG version will take 2x times that.

Thank you both for not disappearing and posting shots of your repair bills. If I was you I would keep hounding Toyota to help with part of the repair bill. A head gasket going bad at 94 is just stupid. Unless they can show it was a result of gross neglect on your end I don't see how they wouldn't help you.

Thanks to everyone for their support. I only got the repair work done at the dealer so in case of a recall I (might) get some compensation.

As a result of endless searching on the web about this issue the main assumption isn't bad antifreeze but either bad original gasket material or the design of the head itself. Either way Toyota should be standing behind us long term owners of Toyota products. My antifreeze had been obviously changed. My understanding is that the new gasket is a redesign. ----- Dave

Dealer had mine for six weeks. It was a combination of the head gaskets being back ordered and the machine shop being slow.

My dealer did give me a FREE loaner while mine was in the shop and I put close to 6500 miles on it.

I guess what really rubbed me wrong was hearing the head gasket had been back ordered because it was redesigned...

I guess some of us know why it was redesigned...

i also had this issue with my car, i called toyota and they said they never heard of such a issue and that their is no recall. I had the gasket replaced and it set me back 2K but i also had everything else replaced too while the motor was pulled. we need to sticky this issue and keep pressing toyota about it.

2K for HG replacement service is pretty good, was that with a Toyo Dealer?

Does anyone happen to have the NEW part number(s) for the 1GR-FE head gaskets... I called the Toyota 800 # but they do not have that info.

I'm having an indie shop do the work and I want to make sure they have the correct, updated gasket kit.
