Forget me for being a total car noob, but why does everyone prefer a v8 over a v6? I have a v8 engine, and I do really enjoy speeding in it but having a v8 kills me in terms of gas $$!!! I had a v6 in my 3rd gen before I totaled it, and gas wasn't too shabby at all on the 3rd gen. Comparing both trucks with today's current prices, the gas for v6 was only like $35-$40ish. The v8 engine gas....between $45-$60!!~~~~

DId you really consider todays current prices? Where are you getting gas at less than $2.50 a gallon? It definitely costs more than $35-40ish to fill up a v6, unless that tank was 10 or 15 gallons.
I pay $3.17 a gallon in jersey. I fill up at a 1/4 tank and its about $45-50, so add another quarter tank and its in the area of $65-70 for a COMPLETE fill.

Nice choice, gonna have the updated V8 with VVTi. What other options are on the truck? Good luck with it!

I can't remember exactly how much gallons but it was definitely between 11-13 gals. My bad, I misworded it out. Back then with my 3rd gen, prices were around 2.80 before it started increasing to today's prices.

The V8 is a mechanically superior engine in every single way. It is a much more proven platform with no known issues unlike HG failures on the V6. The power curve is more suited for the drivetrain of the Cruiser. After being in a V6 for numerous hours(my buddies), it is evident that the engine and overall drive is not nearly as refined.

The V8 (2UZ) has been in production since 1998 and is still in production today. The 2UZ is an update to the extremely popular and robust 1UZ found in LS400s which are still a very desirable car today. Even before that, Toyota was using the guts of the 1UZ in marine applications. It is one of, if not the best gasoline engine on the planet.

$60 is fair for a tank of gas, IMO. I've hit $90 a couple of times in the Cruiser.

Solid answer! Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question, you made things much more clearer. What do you think about the Land Cruiser, a '09? I saw a grey LC parked at the dealership next to mine when I had it serviced and I thought it was a Lexus at first because of its body. Turns out it was a Toyota LC!

It is the pinnacle of Toyota's engineering and design in a vehicle. It is one of the most overbuilt vehicles ever made. Over 1500 engineers spent nearly 6 years designing it which is more than twice the typical R&D period for a car. Everything on the LC is at least twice the size of the 4Runner. The Land Cruiser is designed to withstand 3rd world HD use and that is why it's the UN's vehicle of choice. It is sold in nearly 50 countries and exceeds the safety standards of each one of them. Toyota classifies the 4Runner platform as light duty and the LC platform as heavy duty. It is simply in another league.

The 3UR is a completely new platform. It has proven to make good power; however, long term durability and reliability simply cannot be assessed at this time.

If you can't tell, the LC is my favorite car.

Clockwork, what is the HG failure?

Clockwork, what is the HG failure?

He (EskimoChaos) thinks the V6's are all bound to have head gasket failures because there have been a few. There's a thread on it somewhere around here. And every time someone posts a problem (or potential problem) about the V6 he's quick to point out how superior he thinks the V8 is. He seems to ignore the fact that there are WAY more V8 cracked exhaust manifolds than there are head gasket problems.

Except that you can still drive a car with a cracked manifold. It is far from a critical engine failure. I don't think anything, the V8 is a better engine in literally every single way except mileage and that is negligible.

What's an eskimochaos?

Where is it still in production? I believe the Land Cruiser now uses the 3UR-FE and Wikipedia says the UZ engines were replaced by the UR engines in 2010.

Overseas, it (2UZ) the V6, and the new 5.7L are an option. Oh yea, some countries can pick between two diesels too.

Wikipedia is wrong, the LC was redesigned for the 2008 model year known as the URJ-200 chasis designation.

Doesn't do much good to drive a car that can't pass an emissions test.

eskimochaos is your old username. You were banned, remember? It's not hard to read through the posts for both usernames and find that you're one in the same.

Plus your general demeanor is the same.

OP...congrats on the new Salsa red runner....one of my 2 favorite colors. goodluck with it.

and FWIW, i agree 100% with Clockwork. the v6 is a good motor but its very noisey in comparison to the V8 and are known for a few issues. workin for a dealer a cracked manifold is no big deal for me...ill deal with it when i encounter the problem. i dunno about anyone else but my V8 would typically get better gas mileage than the v6 in its stock form. i dunno about now though with a lift and rack on top....kills its aerodynamics..lol.

um, i'd take a cracked manifold over HG failure...are you kidding me?
