2004 - New Radio, Stuck in 4H

I have a 2004 Limited 4Runner with a JBL RDS system, v6 4wd. I had someone install a new stereo in my car, its a Pioneer AVH-P3200DVD if anyone is interested, which included a new wiring harness, installation kit and steering wheel control adapter.

As some of you may know the entire underside of the dash has to come out, both sides, to get to pull the center console out just to begin removing the existing stereo. Since the stereo has been put in, I noticed a few hours later that the 4WD light was on. We found some sand after messing with the 4WD switch to test and see if I was actually in 4H (not 4L cause i had no issues accelerating to full speed) and that it was not just the light stuck on. If peeling out with all four tires didn't prove I was in 4H, getting ridiculously terrible gas mileage did.

That being said - if I go to take the dash apart myself, what am I looking for? I would assume that during installation the 4WD knob wire is accidentally grounding or touching something that's sending a signal to put it in 4H? I've put it in 4L and 2H, nothing phases it so the knob doesn't seem to be sending any signal at all.

OR if the car was in 4H when the battery was plugged back in could the system just think that 4H is default? Would it help to unplug the battery, double check that I'm in 2H then plug the battery back up as if to 'resync' the system?

Probably they did not re-attach the harness to the switch. Should not take too much to solve.

so since the harness is not attached, the system is in 4H by default? Or what would make it think that in the first place? Just curious

I changed out my 05 stock jbl stereo for an 07 jbl. Once I had my whole console out, I had to move my truck. This obviously meant that I did not have the 4wd switch plugged in. When I started my truck, it was in 4lo with the diff locked. Needless to say, I couldn't move my truck (as it was in my driveway) and had to put the console back together in order to move.

I would agree with ALLEGRO's assessment.

Same- luckily its not too difficult to take it all apart, just have a 10mm socket and extention-

It seemed to have been an unfortunate coincidence that the 4wd switch went out at the same time I was replacing the radio. So we have grounded the pink wire putting it into 2H upon start since it wants to revert to 4H automatically. This is a temporary fix until I can get a new switch from Toyota - about $110. Installing it though means taking the whole dash apart as it comes out from the back and not the front :/

Reviving an old thread, I just added a Sirius tuner to my head unit and noticed once everything is back that mine is also in 4hi, will not go into 2wd or 4lo, oh I got an 07 v6. I really don't want to take this apart again lol.
DID you ever get yours fixed?

Hey!

I actually did get it resolved - it wound up being a solinoid on the 4wd system that went bad. After diagnosing it cost about $550 to fix. I can't remember exactly what it was called but it was an electrical part under the vehicle about halfway down that engages and disengages the system. I think that part itself was like $75?

It was most likely a coincidence on my situation as I don't believe switching the radio caused it but no way of really knowing when it comes to electronics. Good luck!
