2004 t4r sr5 v8 rwd

Hi all and good morning.Now that all my kids are grown already, I could switch now from van to sedan and now to my long dream SUV...a 4Runner. Ever since, way back when...I fell in love with 4R and now that I could afford one, I saw this dealer ad near my house.

It's a V8 4x4, 91k mileage, asking for $11.5k. What do you guys think?

I'm fairly new around here, and I've only had my 4runner for 6 months, so I'm hardly an expert. That price however seems fair (to me), with a few assumptions that must be confirmed.

As with any vehicle you'll want to know its history, where's it's spent most of its life (salt, sun), how it's been driven (city/hiway) and maintainance schedule, smoking drivers, kids with cheerios and lolipops, etc. Of course drive it. Start it cold. Start it hot. Drive it hard. Drive it soft. Crawl around it, check for hidden rust. Test the sunroof and all the other electronic gadgetry.

The vehicle is fast approaching a major service interval, including the need to change its timing belt, possibly water pump, etc. Note these trucks (4th gen v8) are prone to cracked exhaust manifolds. It can be an expensive fix because the cats are integrated. It's potentially a GREAT truck (I know) but do some studying on this forum (there's a thread specifically about what to check out) so you're going in eyes open. If it's in good condition, I'd call it a deal.

I bought mine, an SR5, with 50k more miles for only a couple grand less, in a salty environment. Mine wasn't a screaming deal, but it was fair and I'm pleased.
 
another REALLY important note:

Your subject title heading includes "4x4" but the listing says "RWD." Not saying it wouldn't still be worth the price to the right buyer, but it doesn't appear to be what you were hoping for.
 
Thanks Brian. All your pointers are really helpful and I didn't even thought about what to check....I don't want to just base my decision on emotional attachment since I've been wanting to get one but instead, be knowledgeable too.
I will look into the manifolds issue around this forum and do more search.

Thanks Brian....I got my info mixed up with the other 4R that I was looking at :D
 
I know you live in CA so you don't get snow but if you can spend a couple grand more to get a 4WD 4Runner, you won't regret especially if you like heading to the mountains for camping or trail running.

I personally would keep looking. Be willing to travel for the T4R of your desires and hold out for the one with options you want.

After a long search, aT4R showed up in the local paper, wife and I bought it for a good deal, since the owners stopped maintenance after 100k. We are still getting the vehicle baselined, but has shown immediate improvement after basic maintence performed.

It helps just buying rock auto parts and installing most on my own. The toyota website that shows maintenance was a godsend in our search.
 
Op. I live here too. I almost considered a 2wd since its cheaper and there are cleaner ones around the area. What was i thinking. Get a 4wd. You only need to need it once for you to regret not getting one. For that price you should get all the options you want. It does not hurt to take a day to drive all yhe way to sacramento either.

If youcan live with gold color there is one for sale on craigslist for 6500. 144k. Its in milpitas. Its worth checking out.
 
I passed it up....The driver seat is torn and the dashboard is showing a lot cracks. I will still look around and yah....you are right, bpowa....after thinking about it on the way home,I was really happy that I end up not getting it...I think I would look around for a 4x4 :-D

If your buying it from a dealer. especially Toyota. Ask them next time if they can repair the seat and replace the dash.. It maybe worth your while.. FYI..

The leather on the side. lower part of the seat tends to crack or rip at this age.
