Hi folks, I just bought one, and tried to figure out how much max mpg i can manage Oddly enough it showed a max of 24.6 mpg at 55mph , on rt7, the stetch between winchester and Leesburg. . pleasantly surprised , but perhaps the computer is inexact?
Thx

The computers are terribly inaccurate. Expect 15-18 depending on your driving habits. You were probably getting over 20 mpg's at that exact moment, but as you accelerate, idle, drive through traffic, etc., your mileage will average out. Enjoy the new to you runner!

Welcome from a '05 V8 owner who gets 16mpg's. Inexact it is! We call it the "lie-o-meter" for that reason. Best to do the old-fashioned hand calculation to see what your really getting but don't expect good mpg's.

mpg

Having just purchased a "new to me" 04 V8 Limited in Jan....you can expect 16-17 mpg average....its not horrid...but it is not a hybrid by any means. Enjoy your 4 runner...I know I have!!

I have a '03 V8 limited. I do hand calculations on every tank and compare them to the computer. On average my computer has been accurate +-5% with my 285/70/r17 tires, wondering if the tire size difference affects the stock calculation ratios in the computer and makes it more accurate. With that being said the best I ever did was 24.2 mpg on an 80 mile trip with tail wind from Denver to Fort Collins with lots of hills and 70 mph. On average mixed driving I get 18-19. All city I see that drop to 15-16. Worst tank I ever did was 13 mpg to moab over the Rockies with roof rack and bikes. If you keep track of your driving habits along with your mileage calculations, it's crazy how much conscience driving can affect it. Enjoy the new 4runner!

Good thread, OP. Relevant to my interests. :nicethread:

I reset my "lie-o-meter" last week, and I am currently using an Android app to enter my fill-ups. The on-board has me at ~18.5 in mixed driving, I'll be interested to see what the app says is my actual mpg.

I'll report back, but I highly recommend you get some sort of pencil-and-paper/app/spreadsheet method to see your actual MPG.

I can't see me ever getting 24 mpg in one, but 13 mpg sounds doable. :biggrin1:

Update:
Filling up from a 1/4 tank today has me going:
231mi
14.10gal
= 16.39mpg

OBC my '05 V8 is reporting 18.5mpg, so yeah, it's a little off.

Granted, this is only my second tracked fill-up, and there will be variances in the pump cut-off point, so results should be tracked over a longer period for a consistent result. I'll try to remember to update this thread every fill-up (usually Sunday).

thanks for the insights folks :) I meant to put the "inexact" in double quotes of course. 24+ did sound too good to be true. I"ll try the old and tried manual approach.

I just donated an RL with 345K miles on it - so, coming from that background, the ride quality and wind noise in the T4R are "curiously: "rugged" , so to speak :) But I knew all this, going in. Mechanical reliability and the ability to handle snow storms override everything else for me at this point.

And now , on to more research about grill guards, bumper guards, trailer hitches and... more toys

thx

Figured I would give an update.

Onboard computer is reporting 18.0 exactly. Safe to say it's optimistic.

I hadn't looked at my mpg reading on the computer until about a month ago. After two tanks it reads 15.9 which is correct against my hand calculation. In the setting for the navigation I reset the setting for "recalibrate for new tires" and wonder if it worked for my 285/70/r17's and is kind of accurate.

My readout is .6 mpg optimistic, on average, with 265/70/17 and is fairly consistent from tank to tank. I wouldn't be surprised if your 285s come pretty close to offsetting the built in optimism almost completely.
