Magnuson Supercharger 2K Mile Review and 6K Mile Review

If your friend can remove an intake then he can install the SC. Only down side is figuring out where you’re gonna mount the pump if you have a full steel bumper.

its a stock bumper, yes he could install. He has done engine swaps its just if we can find time to do this project. This weekend I'm installing the 21 OEM headlights should hopefully be a simple project and no issues.

As for cost I'd expect about 1k in labor from a shop. My goal is about $6500 or less on this.

I need some group therapy....

I've always wanted a SC ever since I owned a 3rd gen and Toyota was selling them as OEM. I now have a 2013 Limited with 65,000 miles. I was just quoted $8900 OTD (Bay Area, California). They wouldn't let me supply my own (like from the Vegas dealer) so the SC alone is $5,995 which is the retail price w/o shipping. The good news is that they have one in stock, otherwise it would be an 8 week lead time to order one from Magnuson. I can afford it, but $9k is a hell of a lot of money to spend on my 8-year-old vehicle.

What advice do you have for me?

If you’re not mechanic inclined I can see how it would be better to have a professional do it. 3k in labor is high anywhere in my opinion, they’re not having to buy special tools to install it, but as someone else said it’s your money.

How much did you pay for the headlights? I wish they were available two years ago before I went full retrofit. Not that I don’t like them but the OEM fit and finish is second to none.

I’d consider doing the WP while in there, possibly idler pulleys too. It’s a lot easier now then once it’s on. I didn’t think twice about another $150-200 at that point

think best price I found months ago for the magnuson SC was around $5200-5500 range. Local shop would install for $1k which is reasonable. I'm still debating it, I have a 17 sr5 prem. modded the way I like it with only 53k miles. We will keep the SUV for awhile.

$9k is a crazy high quote for the supercharger and install. It’s your money but I would recommend installing yourself.

In markets like the Bay it’s not so much what they want to do a job, but how many smaller high margin jobs they lose doing your job. It’s kinda the opposite of a place where mechanics are hungry for work. It’s basically a premium paid for hogging the shops resources, which still doesn’t make much sense to me, but it is what it is. I’m seeing it here in CO, and in other areas of business.

Installed mine this weekend. Did it myself, took my time and was diligent about cleaning all mating surfaces and torquing every single bolt to specs. took me about 22 hrs total including install of a CSF radiator. have only driven it 50 miles or so, but it feels much better. Not like a rocket but how it should have felt from the factory. I would say feels on par with a 6.2 Silverado or ram 1500 hemi but less torque off the line till it kicks in at 2k rpm.

many bolts are hard to get to and work spaces are tight, but overall the kit is great quality and it looks like OEM. If you have the money and want it, I would highly recommend it. I already loved the 4runner but this addition has totally renewed that and now I do not feel like it has a huge lack of power.

How much interest or demand would there be for YotaWerx Tuning to make an aftermarket tune for 5th gen 4Runner Magnuson supercharger owners, like we did for the 3GTacoma?

Are people generally happy with the 4R supercharger performance, or does it leave something/anything to be desired?

I feel the Magnuson tune is quite good, but wouldn’t be opposed to exploring another option if the numbers showed it was a little bit better

I would be interested as I feel the tune runs stupid rich and probably leaves a bit on the table.

I would be very interested in getting more "usable" power out of the SC kit versus getting more maximum power. What I mean by this is a substantial bump in the lower RPMs which would make this a much more fun daily driver... I just dont want to have to consistently rev it out to 5000K+ to really get the most from the kit.

That is not possible really as it's the nature of how a supercharger works. It doesn't start producing significant boost till higher RPM since it is a fixed belt drive. The only way to improve this is to upgrade to a smaller pulley which doesn't seem to exist for this platform.

Yes and no. If you view our dynograph for our NA 4R premium fuel tune, we successfully added significant torque down lower in rpm, as well as on our 3GTacoma tune for the Magnuson supercharger (roughly 60whp additional at 3k, and 100ft-lbs additional as well). Now I can't say that we can necessarily replicate that on the 4Runner with the SC due to different platforms being used for the FI side, different blower unit sizes, fueling setups, etc, but we could certainly try.

Regardless, all of our tunes are considered "drivability first". We don't go out of our way to only add power up high in the rpm band where it's not needed.

Thanks OP for the detailed review. I've consulted this many times and took the advice to use constant pressure clamps for the upper and lower lines of the coolant reservoir.

One question however, did your S/C kit include a K&N type filter when you originally got it? I could have sworn that I read originally in the install manuals (prior version) for 4Runner kits upto MY19, that it had a K&N type filter.

I recently had a MY20+ kit installed in my 2021 and the instructions now mentioned to "Inspect your air filter and replace as needed" OEM air filter.

Nope. My kit back in 2018 did not come with any air filter.

I'm currently communicating with them regarding the 2023 tune. Been patiently waiting and from my communications with them they finally do have their hands on a 2023 and verifying the tune. Even have the constant pressure clamps in-waiting... (had to buy a bag of them from amazon). Definitely miss the added power.

Congrats and enjoy the truck!

Just ordered mine today for my '21 4Runner ORP.

They're not advertising any Black Friday deals but if anyone's interested, PM me and I'll let you know the promo they gave me today. Sales manager asked me not to post publicly.
