2005 4Runner Speedometer Quite Working

Took the 4Runner (V6) into the dealer for a timing belt replacement, found out it has a chain which surprised me!

They did a basic curtsy check of all the systems (brakes, battery etc)

on my way home i noticed the speedo wasn't working, all the other gauges are working fine. drove the car back to the dealer and they spent 2 hrs troubling shooting it. The battery is very weak so they wanted to start with replacing it. They said most likely the speedo gauge is bad, $700 part + 2-3 hrs for replacement.

It's the wife's car, she's not excited about driving without a speedo (she likes to push the speed limit :)). she now has a speedo app on her phone but...

Is this a coincidence?

Now what? HELP!

Replacing the instrument cluster takes less than an hour.

You can usually find lots of used units on ebay in the 100-200 range.

Also, there are a lot of Electronic Shops that do cluster repair. Google instrument cluster repair.

.

I had a cluster problem..but mine was different.

Other people had similar problems.

So I think Toyota has a problem with these clusters for 05 and 06. Only heard problems for those vehicles.
