Need a little help! My 4runner started running hot when it is idling(for a period of time) and cools when car is moving. It only happen twice. I check the coolant level and had to add about a half gallon of coolant. The thermostat seems to be working but I will use my temp gun I have at work to see what temp is going in and out of the radiator. Wondering if the low coolant level could be the cause or if it could be something else

I checked the fan clutch it looks OK. it starts turning as soon as the engine turns over and stops pretty quick with very little slip. I do hear air getting thru the radiator

Low coolant will cause that.
But the next question is why are you low or losing 1/2 gal coolant?

Blown head gasket.

i over looked checking the level (can't remember the last time I check it)when i change the oil. It's my wife car and she uses the car for work. She is a home health nurse so there is alot of idle time when she is making phone calls and writing down her notes. Also i have never got the coolant flushed or had to add any and it has 130000 miles on it . It might have lost its level over time. Hopefully.
