2006 4Runner Limied.... Take off running boards or no?!?!

I'm terrible when it comes to anything like this.... is it as easy as it seems?

Also if I do take them off how easy is it to reconnect the lights for the running boards? Are they plug and play or do they wires have to be cut?! Will this accelerate any sort of rust on the truck?

don't know about the limited for sure but on the sport it is super easy. can't imagine it's much different on the limited. amount of difficulty depends on the amount of rust below your truck.

Took me all of 10 minutes a side, maybe less, with my 06 sport. Car is rust free though.

Oh man the rust factor scares me a bit... Maybe ill leave them on. =P

Its 3-4 bolts per side, easy to get to and one plug at the front. I don't see any "rust" issues with removing them.

agreed with everyone else, it is super easy... a handful of bolts and a couple of plugs for the lights. I doubt you will have any issue with rust unless your truck is in rough shape. Ditto on reinstalling them, it should only take a few minutes if you decide to do it.

Personally - I pulled the running boards off my limited years ago and have never once considered putting them back on

I removed mine awhile back, but my wife complains it's too tall so I may put them back on (or use it as an excuse to get sliders)

I ended up putting the bolts back where they were so I wouldn't lose them and they'd plug those holes. I wrapped the socket for the lights in a decent amount of plastic wrap and then a few layers of electrical tape and shoved them in one of the open holes of the frame so they wouldn't dangle around. Haven't had any issues since I did it maybe 6 months ago

Not quite stock because I'm running the 5100 lift on the 0.85 clip, but the images are the same day with and without boards.

Personally I LOVE the look without the boards on there, but my youngest is 3 and the extra step saves me having to lift her up into the truck every single time we stop, so for now I'm keeping them on.

They are too high to be very useful as a step (seems like you might as well step up another couple of inches and onto the floorboard itself), and the extra few inches they stick out make it harder to get into the seat. My pants would often touch the running board on the way in/out, which left some nice dirt/mud scuffs.
Does it depend on how you get in/out of the vehicle? There seem to be two primary groups of people - Feet first or @ss first. Me? I sit down, then swing my feet in... a product of New England winters if I had to guess. Sit down, knock the snow and mud off my boots, then pull my feet in.

I agree. I feel like I'm jumping over my running boards getting in and out. I think they look solid on the Limited, especially when lit up and it sure helps get my mom in and out of the truck, the boards & all the handles inside.

I kept mine until I welded my sliders onto the frame… never making it back onto the truck either.

At first I tried to sell mine, then tried to give them away… they ultimately ended up in a dumpster when I moved because they were so hard to get rid of.

Sounds about right, I had posted them here a few years ago and there was no interest then either. They'll be in a load of scrap metal this spring if they are still hanging around along with the stock skids and a bunch of other crap.

Called several dealerships and was told its not an available part any longer . If anyone has any in decent shape, Ill take them off your hands.

Best bet may be to see of someone can weld some new brackets on.

Now if anyone has any free ones nearby I'll accept them. :-D I assume mine were removed because they rusted out. My truck didn't have any when I got it, just the lighting wires hanging down.

All the parts seem to be available at least from this dealer, usually if it's no longer available it says so, that being said most of the parts are not what I would say is cheap.
