My starter seems to be finished....click click click click then it hesitates and starts....

If I want to change only the contacts will the dealer do it or charge me for the whole thing?

As it is now dealer is suggesting to change everything duhhh

Right, and you're probably wrong. How old is your battery?

Assuming it is the starter contact and not something else like the battery, there is absolutely no way the dealer should replace the whole thing, sure its easier and more profitable for them but these starters are pretty beefy pieces of gear and commonly last the life of the vehicle with only the contacts needing replacement. I replaced the contacts on my 3rd gen, it was a PITA to get the starter out and back in but disassembly and installing the new parts was pretty easy. It was like $18 in parts or something cheap like that. The dealer will charge you labor though, probably 2 hours min, likely longer to do it for you.

dealer parts catalog doesnt show contacts available for that year model.

Yeah that's what they told me.... I had brought it in to another garage last year and they diagnosed the problem 4 times with no success. They checked the voltage, battery everything....and still no culprit to be found.

The problem seems to manifest itself when the engine is cold mostly.

Brought it in yesterday, they replaced the whole thing cause the system wasn't pulling individual components....

At first glance, the vehicle is starting with no issues.
