Hey Y'all. I am new to this Forum, but come here from ToyotaNation where I was a former Admin, and Member for many moons.

I recently purchased a 2006 Sport Edition V8 from a friend with a broken timing belt, which broke before the recommended interval.

The Truck has 205k on it, and the timing belt broke on the previous owner resulting in some bent valves. So, I spent a little time on it, and brought her back from the dead.

I am an ASE Certified World Class Technician, and Hold ASE Master Certifications in Automotive Technician, Medium/Heavy Truck Technician, and Collision repair. I am an Advanced Level Specialist in Automobile, Med/Heavy Truck, and Hybrid/Electric Vehicles. I am also a Certified Undercar Specialist, Truck Equipment Specialist, Service Consultant, and Alternative Fuels Technician. Aside from my ASE Credentials, I am also a GM Certified World Class Technician.

Below are some photos of my start to finish on the 4Runner bringing her back to life, after replacing the 16 of 32 valves that got bent when the Timing Belt Broke.

Enjoy! And if you have any technical questions, feel free to ask. I do have full access to Toyota TIS for all Toyota related documents.

Awesome job!

I hope you stay active on the forum and can offer help and advice to other members, with your experience you would be a great asset to the forum!

Yes, Thanks for pictures and your expertise. Were the bent valves all intake or exhaust, or a combination?

Awesome thread, and great pics outlining the process! Glad to see that you cleaned and painted the intake and covers prior to reinstall. I hate when people get everything apart for a repair anyway, but leave parts looking crappy. My OCD NEVER allows me to do that, and usually prolongs the job greatly because I end up fully detailing EVERY part, including the bolts, but that is way overkill for daily drivers.

Edit: When you unbolted the exhaust manifolds to remove the heads, did you need to remove them completely, or can the heads be removed with them still in place?

I saw no obvious piston damage from the valves contacting them in the pictures - any marks left from the belt breaking?

Sarge

The Service procedure actually calls to remove and install the Heads/Manifolds together as one assembly.

No piston damage. Only slight "kiss" marks from them making contact, Thankfully.

So 200k is the timing belt life expectancy. Dam i changed mine waaaayyy to early

This one was actually replaced 85k prior to it breaking. So it broke 5k earlier than the interval.

No Pulley or water pump issues, so it must've just been a defective belt, as it should've lasted well beyond 90k.

Very interesting. I’m surprised they can come out that way with the CATs being so big, but I guess there must be enough clearance. Do you reinstall the heads with the manifolds on as well?
