From an older post, how did the 4runner do on red cone? Coming from the jeep world I had the mindset the 4runner might struggle even built up. I rember it being crazy rocky in my jku. One boulder on a turn was catching everyone. I tend to forget how capable these can be.

It handles Red Cone just fine. There are 2 obstacles that need a little finesse, otherwise it works well. Skids help.

Opted to go back to an All Terrain tire in order to run year round. The KM2's sure where good looking, but I didn't want to run in the snow here in Colorado.

Opted for the Falken AT3W 285/75/17 mounted to the new Relations Race Wheels R2 17x8.5. *Note, these wheels do not fit 4th Gen 4runner hub dust shields. They only worked since we ran spidertrax with them. Not happy with the RRW sales guy about this oversight*

Tires are nice and big, quiet on the roads. The sidewalls aren't as burly looking as the KM2s or Duratracs, but overall they are nice looking tires for a great price.

Those are the exact tires/size I am looking at. Did you run them before you installed your BL? I don't have a BL and wonder if that will even work

LCAs Revisited

The SPC's seem to be ok - I had replaced the bushings about 20k ago. I will say they do make some noise - I tend to spray grease on them once a week.

The LCA's I used from Mevotech might be shot already after about 10k miles. I get a lot of clunks and squeeks out of them, and I'm assuming the bushings have too much play in them already.

Like so many others on this forum I'm in the market for LCAs. Back in early 2017, you said your Mevotech LCAs might be shot after a short time. I'm not going to work mine like you do, I'm more light duty just to get me to some MTB trails occasionally, but mostly grocery getting.

Did you get the Mevotech Premium or the original grade?

All I read is that OEM is the way to go, but the reason everyone needs LCAs is because the OEMs are shot...mine on the truck I just bought at 95K.

Rebuilding OEM with Moog ball joints seems fine but the bushings seem to go quickly which makes me wonder about the full arms.

I am not handy enough to do the work myself, so I need to work with my mechanic who I trust. Rebuilding may not be in the cards, the arms are pretty rusted or I'd consider the Moog LBJ & Energy Suspension poly bushings that folks seem to really like.

Just for parts, seems like I'm headed to OEM for LCAs.
OEM Dealershiop 610
Mevotech Supreme 400
Moog 340
1A Auto Parts 150

My UCAs may be shot, seems like since they don't hold the entire weight of the vehicle & I have no offroad or lift intentions, maybe Moog or other aftermarket would be fine.

Any thoughts you (or anyone else reading this) would have based on your experience would be great.

I have a smooth looking 2008 Limited V8 with an undercarriage only a mechanic could love thanks to North East winters.

Too many cookie cutter 4runners in Colorado these days so I picked up a new truck to serve as mountain transport. The Lexus is buttery smooth. Added some 275/65/18 Falkens and HID retrofit.:lookout:

Gracias. It feels like my Toyota, just smoother, quieter, and nicer interior. I may start swapping parts from the 4runner onto the GX...

That's so awesome. I've been getting myself into trouble looking at GX460s at work lately. It's like the next logical progression from a 4th gen...

Are you gonna keep your 4th gen though? I love your build...I have links to your build on my spreadsheet lol

I've considered selling the 4runner once or twice, but at the end of the day I made a vow to keep it forever, it's been a fantastic vehicle for us. I'll likely hit 250k miles on it then garage it for weekend trips. Likely going to refresh the suspension, and throw some 35's on it for adventures. I'm just really tired of driving it and seeing every other truck in Colorado being a 5th gen 4runner with the exact same cookie cutter parts. What was once unique is now mass market trend. Not really my jam.

The GX is a nice refresh on how smooth a truck can be vs my heavy ass 4runner.

It's the same thing even all the way east here in Florida. When I first got my 4runner, I loved that it was the only one like it in town. Seeing another 4runner with even a lift on it let alone wheels or racks was rare as hell. Now everyone and their mother is driving a 5th Gen 4runner with a basic spacer lift, roof rack and ladder and xsp wheels and then of course maxtrax, cargo boxes, awnings, rtt, extra gas cans etc. all while sitting in a parking lot. I'll never understand the people daily driving to and from work with hundreds of pounds of offroad/camping gear strapped to their roof.

It's because social media. The 5th Gen 4runner has become the Honda Civic from the 90's. I went from enjoying sharing my adventures on the trail to keeping my f'n mouth shut as to not be associated with "overlanders" like SwellRunner and the like. Nearly every 5th gen is the exact same. And anytime a 'snorkel' is someones first 'mod', makes me want to puke.

haha the swellrunner guy has more money than he knows what to do with im pretty sure...then again i respect someone who works for all that and it does appear he works hard with the vacation rental business. i hear your point on him though - very cookie cutter. i lost respect for him when he was overseeing one of his installs and the techs clearly were like, wtf leave...

your truck is awesome!

It doesn't even have to be a mod now lol...comes with the new TRD pro as an option...

Looking forward to your GX build though.

Was wondering if you had any updates on the GX? I was actually testing some waters on an FJ and GX this past week and reminded me that you actually made the jump. Any opinions you would share after 6+ months of ownership?
