2006 V8 4x4 Rear Axle cross reference - help

Hi all,

I've been searching but can't find the exact information i'm looking for. I have a 06 v8 4wd with a bent rear axle (confirmed by alignment shop). I am trying to find definitive information to what axle I can use? Toyota has 2 different part numbers for 2wd and 4wd v8's, and will not confirm if they are the same. I can buy a 2wd axle cheap, but worried there might be a difference. Several shops and junkyards say NO they don't interchange.

The whole assembly, housing and all. Since mine is bent, the cost of replacing the bearing is about the same as a used axle + swapping.

My searching showed only one part number for all USA spec 4Runner axle housings, 42110-60820

the actual housing is the same part number. the only different part number i could find was the drive shaft flange for some reason. the 4x4 one is like 70 bucks and the 2wd is like 260. but literally any rear axle from a 2003+ 4th gen and a 2007-2009 fj cruiser will bolt in. just check the gear ratio in it, the manual fjs and 03-04 v6 runners had like a 3.90 ratio in them instead of 3.73.

It has been a few months... Any new information?
I suspect my axle may be bent too, though I have not had it checked yet.

The difference in the flanges is that on the 2wd it has a sorta harmonic balancer on the flange because for some reason the 2wd models had an issue with the drive shaft vibrating and Toyota added the balancer to solve the issue, the 4wd didn't seem to have this issue and thusly has a normal flange.

The flanges I'm not 100% sure but I think that they are interchangable.

You can contact ECGS (East Coast Gear Supply) who sells some of the best rebuilt third members/rear axles, front axles, etc., and they can tell you more of what will and what won't work, many T4Rs owners and forum members use them for replacement parts on their T4Rs, especially front axles/CV joints, etc.

A 2wd flange will work on your 4wd. I have a 4wd, blew the rear diff, and accidentally ordered the wrong flanged 3rd member from ECGS (the 2wd one w/ harmonic balancer). It is the same length as the 4wd flange and the same bolt pattern so it bolted up just fine.

The only difference was that instead of having nuts on the backside of the bolts connecting the flange and the driveshaft together, the harmonic balancer is thicker so it has threads already in it so you don't need the nuts on the backside of the bolts.

I talked with ECGS and they said it would probably be fine.
