2006 Windshield Strength

Last week, my poor luck with windshields caught up with me. As some of you may recall, I had the windshield replaced on my old 1997 T4R due to a rock hit & a running crack & within a month, I had another rock hit & crack.

Well, my propensity for finding road rocks caught up to my brand new T4R. Riding around I-285 in Atlanta this past week with my wife, a rock smashed my windshield. The sound was so familiar to me. It sounded like a bullet hit my car. My wife jumped almost out of the sunroof! I quickly scanned the windshield for a crack, but all I found was a slight scuff in the glass surface. No real damage. I was impressed that the glass could withstand such an impact without being cracked through the layers of glass.

Well, two days later, I was heading to work & sure enough, another rock jumped up & hit my windshield right in my line of sight. Same loud impact sound. This time, I even saw the rock coming. I saw it hit the glass & then roll up the glass after the impact. Once again, no crack. Merely a scuff in the surface.

There has been a lot of talk here about the windshields being thicker on the 2006 model T4R. Well, as someone who has gone through a good share of rock hits & windshields, I can testify that this is some damn tough glass!

my 06 4Runner just got a nice rock crack on Thursday. I was driving on the highway at about 50 mph's (in heavy traffic) and a rock flew up from the truck in front of me.

And honestly, I don't think that rock would have cracked any other windshield on any of my cars. My Jeep Wrangler has been hit harder without cracking.

I also heard they were thicker this year to cut down on road noise, but I am very skeptical now.

LSUMBA,

Good to know. :) I had a rock/pebble hit mine two weeks ago, just like yours, it sounded like a bullet--very loud pop. I briefly looked at the glass all I could find was a tiny pit and the surface marred, no cracks or chips. I'll find out this weekend when I wash the truck. I just hope this glass is much more tougher than my Camry's--cracked in six months and Safe-Lite says Camry windshield replacements are common, at least one a week.

I would check your hood and roof for scratches just in case. Make sure those rocks didn't bounce on those areas before and after hitting your windshield leaving a long scratch on paint. Hopefully the rock(s) cleared those areas as you were moving forward.

I swear I am the rock magnet!! At lunch today I got hit by yet ANOTHER rock. Same result. No crack, only a surface nick in the glass.

Not sure why some people see their 06 glass cracking so easily, the stuff on my truck seems to be bulletproof!

(knock on wood)
