Hi all,

I'm new to the forum an thought it would be best to start out with my own contribution to the community. I recorded the replacement of the front brakes in my 4th generation 4Runner last night. Currently it has ~40k on the car and this has been one damn fine car. Glad to see so many fellow fanatics! So, here'a my first video. Hopefully it is encouraging for those looking to do the work on their own cars. If so, this would be a good way to get your hands dirty.

The "wagner thermos quiet ceramics" was not quiet at all I had to return them. Let me know how they work out for you?
 
so far no issues with the Wagners. I haven't noticed any difference in loudness vs. the stock Sumitomos. I'll follow-up later once I have a few more miles on them. So far I've put on ~50.
 
There doesn't appear to be any brake dust issues yet, I've only driven it about ~50 miles so far. I just gave it a bath last night so I'll monitor over the next week to see how they are performing. I'll keep you posted!
 
I've been a fan of Wagner brake parts for over 30 years. They make EXCELLENT products and they stand behind them.
 
Just my opinion based on my experiences with my 2 4th gens, an 04 & 08. I Think 40K miles for a brake job was somewhat early. I got 71k on my factory brakes on my 04 and from the looks of the front pads I still had 10-15k of usable life on them without the squealers hitting the rotors. When I changed them I used OEM pads and Advance Auto parts rotors. I only changed them at 71k because I thought the front rotors were warped. In my case it was the rear rotors that were warped. So those got changed the next week. I just changed all 4 rotors and pads about a month ago at 121K miles, 50k since the first change. The rear rotors were warped again, the inboard pad on the right front was worn down to about 1/8 of an inch of pad due to the inboard pistons on the right front caliper being frozen/rusted/corroded. I replaced both front calipers just to be safe. Both rear calipers were fine. I used advance auto parts gold pads, fronts are ceramic, rears are semi-metalic, and advance rotors front and rear. Good quite stops and very little brake dust.

I also had a 08 SE 4x4 with a Daystar2.5/1.5 from new to 55k miles and the brakes still had plenty of life left. I traded it in a month ago on a 08 Sequoia SR5 w/38k miles on it.

Unless you have alot of city miles 40k just seems early to me. :D IMO

My wife and I lived in the San Francisco bay area for the past 3.5 years. Definitely a lot of breaking. There was ~10% pad left up front, but the rotors were behaving badly.

On my last vehicle, I changed the Wagner Thermo Quiets out for Raybestos advance tech Ceramic...much, much quieter and very low dust. I made the mistake of putting Duralast (from Autozone) on my 4runner because I was in a hurry. Good stopping power but lots and lots of dust. I will change them to Raybesto advance tech Ceramic or EBC next time I change them out. I would like to get one of the verity of EBC's brakes (red, green and yellow). I have read good things about EBC being high performance, quiet and very low dust.

Hello,

It's been a few months since I posted this. So far the front brake setup I went with has been working like a champ. No issues to report at this time and the amount of brake dust doesn't appear to be anything abnormal (Disclaimer: I do wash the 4Runner regularly - once every 1-2 weeks)

I'll keep you posted should I experience any undesirable attributes related to this.

Jason, had one of your pistons been frozen, at what point and how would you have seen that? Can you or someone expand on that a bit?

I've never done brakes, but may want to try that soon. Maybe I'll take a look ahead of time to get my parts ready. Dealer told me last visit rear pads had 30% left.

Hi All,

Just wanted to follow-up and let everyone know that these brakes have been performing well. Brake dust is minimal and braking is great! I highly recommend this setup. Pretty soon I'll be working on the rear brakes. I'll try to make a video for them as well.

Like others said the video helps so much more than just a writeup so thanks for posting this and taking the time to video it. My brakes have been screeching for a while now when I stop so I need to do mine soon. I think my rotors are warped as well. I too would like to know how deep we need to dig in to diagnose a frozen piston. With my luck at least one is frozen on mine.

Excellent video. Found it on a search, since its one of my plans this weekend. Its basically the same as my 93 T4R. Curious why you replaced the rotors??
