What real or practical advantage would there be for the 100% to one wheel 4wd system compared to the 4runners? None I would guess.

I have to agree. I never had a wheel stop turning on my 160 hp '89 4Runner with Detroit Locker.

and if you're bitching how bad Lexus/Toyota is... because they're blah blah blah is old and outdated.. why are you even on this forum or for that matter thinking of buying a 2007?
Yeah. Like I said, I think he would be happier if he bought a Jeep. I know that it would make me happy if he bought a Jeep.

WOW...this is quite an entertaining thread. iamtwonice seems like a pretty ironic screen name for someone who came here & posted what amounts to "4Runners suck, Lexus suck, non-optitron dashboards suck, and japanese 4WD sucks. Any chance this garbage vehicle will be fixed in a year?"

Methinks that iamtwonice has no desire in a 4Runner to begin with & he is simply here to stir the pot.

You are very correct. However the next closest Lexus dealership is at least 100 miles away from me, and I refuse to purchase another vehicle from a crappy dealership. Toyota will not do waranty work or recalls. Much less aggravation to just purchase a Toyota. It is only going to be my winter rat any ways.

Maybe you should move...as in to another board.

I think all of us here love our 4runners, if all you're looking for is a "winter rat" you're in the wrong place.

i dont know about that, but IMHO i would much rather have dual lockers and have true 4wd than a computer telling my truck which tire needs power and how much. what do you plan to do with your 4runner, and what model lexus do you own? and are you kidding about the dash holding you back? what kind of 4wd system do you want? you want it to be like landrovers? you do seem to like to stir the pot up on a few subjects. and just to clarify, exactly how much offroading have you personally done where you have even needed to put it in 4wd? i know that 80% of the time i go, i leave it in 2 and only when it gets REALLY sticky, do i put it in 4, but i almost never use 4 hi unless its raining outside and im hauling @$$ or im rallying down a dirt road at 2 in the morning. i would like to see what you look like, i have a good idea, but wnat to confirm

have you ever met someone who won't eat anything unless it's off of a china plate? Someone who won't drink water unless it's in a green bottle that costs 2 bucks? Someone who won't go camping unless they have air conditioning or heat? I have. i can't even think of a reason why you would want 100% of the power to go to 1 wheel... do you want to smoke 1 tire at the green light like a light duty chevy? And optitron dash...ever see how much those illuminated needles cost when they go out? Personally, if you want extreme bells and whistles, buy a land rover. You know why those land rovers have those windows all over? So you can see the tow truck coming...

I'm sorry.....but not buying a vehicle because of an optitron dash is fuckin retarded. I have an optitron in my 05 Matrix and the standard in the 4Runner, and I don't notice any difference in "safety," or performance. Sure they look a little different.....but that is 99% caused by the 2 different colours.

Also, if you're reeeeally hoping Toyota will change this stuff for 07 right after they just facelifted the 06.....well, there's an extremely high chance of that not happening.

And as for the 4wd system being inadequate.....have you seen some of the 4-wheeling guys on this forum have done with 4rth gens? Maybe search around a little, cause I'd be surprized if you need anything more than what it comes with stock.

Or just go buy a Jeep, that would work too.

You people need to relax a bit. I did not call your mommy names or push your sister in the sand box. Simply stated for 45k certain technology should be make available on a vehicle. The optitron dash is cheap current technology. The dash available now is really the same technology that would be on a car made 20 years ago. I really am waiting for 2007 because I want the optitron dash. The 4 wheel drive system has really had no major advancements on this vehicle considering the current technology available. If for some reason say 3 tires get no traction, the fourth will not move at all. 100% engine power to any one tire insures max traction period. This is state of the art, it is also the future of 4 wheel drive. To not take advantage of this is a shame. Maybe you people are content with 8 track tapes, but I would rather have a ipod and cd's. and H.ID. headlights.

Try to be a little nicer life is too short.

OK, which advertising brochure did you read this one from? The devil's in the details, of course. Care to elaborate exactly how it works? Does it have viscous couplings which can overheat and fail easily and are of limited use off road? If the system fails under hard or long-term use then you have 0% power going to any wheel. Often old technology also means proven, reliable technology.

That statement is wrong for the 4runner.

4wd for off-roading is not rocket science and doesn't have to be. Maybe if you want an onroad awd/4wd system they can make it more complicated for you.

What exactly (make, model) are you comparing the 4runners' 4wd system to?

Sorry, but this statement is wrong. If 3 wheels have no traction then the 4th wheel should get 50% of the drivetrain power.

Yep, so instead of hanging out here complaining you should go buy a Jeep.

The V8 is a permenant 4wheel drive system, dont confuse that with the lesser quality all wheel drive. This system is permenantly engaged and may be operated safetly on dry pavement. The V6 may not be operated in the same manner.

.

NOT true.. The V6 SELECTABLE 4WD system operates EXACTLY like the V8 full-time 4WD system. If a V6 owner wants to, they can leave it on all the time, any condition, any road , any terrain. There is no functional difference whatsoever from the V8 system.

Why did they make the V8 a full-time 4WD only and not selectable???? Unanaswerable.......Probably only to set them apart from each other.

hhhmmmmmmm........

hhmmm...

I sent Toyota an email regarding the 3 tire situation I spoke of before. They did say if 3 tires got no traction the 4th tire will get no power. The Hummer. not the civilian model the big one that the military uses, will send almost 100% of the engine power to any one tire. This system is not very complicated and is proven technology. Like I said before, it is the future of 4 wheel drive. I am aware that the Hummer you see on the road now is unreliable, but that is not the vehicle I am talking about.

And yes I do own a H1 lHummer, also I drive a Lexus GX470, I believe in the 4Runner and that is why I am here. These are my winter vehicles, and I call them winter rats. Sorry I hurt your feelings so much. I live in the snowiest metro city in the USA, when summer comes these are not fun to drive, so the summer car comes out, hence the term winter rat.

And how much is a new H1?!?!

And the 4runner is not a no compromise military vehicle. It has to be driven on the road the majority of the time (even if you are an avid four wheeler), marketed to the masses and costs kept within a competitive range.

Toyota once had a vehicle that was very similar to the Hummer called the Megacruiser (I don't know if they made these available or not, only saw a few pictures of them) but look them up they are cool. That is the Toyota you should compare to the H1.

You state you have an H1. Did you buy this new? If so, I cannot see how you can complain that "for 45K certain technology should be available on a vehicle" when you paid $100K for a H1, which has nothing high tech on it. The 4WD drive system uses ABS sensors and locking differentials to achieve off-road capability. ABS sensor based "traction control " has been around for several years and is on many SUV's today, including the 4runner. Locking differentials have been around for decades. Not state of the art. Add locking diffs to the 4runner and you would get similar torque distribution capability. Gear reduction hubs have been used in large militray vehicles for years as well. In addition, H1 has good old fashion "20-year old technology" dash and good old fashion halogens. The central tire inflation is not high tech either, it just integrates an on board air system with the tires. In terms of technology, the 4runner has more with its HAC, DAC, VSC, EBD, BA, voice activated navigation system with bluetooth, rear view camera, ....... So for 45K, you get more technology than if you were to spend $100K on a 4x4 with good old-fashion heavy-duty mechanical systems that have been around for years. Seems like you might be the one still embracing 8-tracks.....and willing to pay Blu-Ray/HD-DVD prices for it.

I did not save the email. It just said thank you for contacting toyota, it is from customers like yourself we consider for future products, something like that. The situation you have described is rare, and the 4 wheel drive system is not designed to engage a 4th tire should 3 tires not have traction. That was all the information given back to me regarding my question.

Ok, here are the gauges in my Matrix/4Runner.....now please explain to me what the huuuuuuuuge deal is? I'd love to know, since I own both and obviously haven't figured it out yet.....I actually think the Matrix's gauges are a lot more boring.

Also, again, in all of my reading on this forum I have NEVER heard of someone being stuck off-road because of the situation you keep describing.....
