2007 V8 4WD intermittent problem starting

Hi guys,
I now have 182K miles on my '07 Limited, V8 4WD that I have owned since brand new with very few issues. Last week it started normally first thing in the morning and I drove my kids to daycare 5 minutes from our house. I parked it at their daycare for about 30 minutes and then would not start when I needed to leave. When I turned the key, all the dash lights came on like normal but then, just a rapid clicking noise and no start at all. The engine did not even turn over. So I jump started it right up on the first try with my portable battery pack. drove it into the dealer and they said the battery, alternator and starter were all OK. So I drove it for another week with no issues at all and then yesterday it did the same thing again. It has started normally several times a day, every day between these 2 instances of not starting at all.

Have any of you 4th gen guys had anything happen like this?
Any ideas on what could cause this?

It's been at the dealership for about 24 hours now, and they cannot replicate the problem.

I had something that sounds like a similar issue 3 or 4 months ago... but it turned out to be my battery. I ended up replacing my dealership battery with an Optima Yellow Top and havent had an issue since. Not sure what battery you are running or how old it is...but maybe its something that simple? :noidea:

Clean all of the battery grounds connections and retighten them securely, at the battery and at the body, many times this is one cause to similar starting issues.

If the above doesn't solve the issue, make sure the dealer is "load" testing the battery.

If none of the above solves the issue, it's possible there is a loose or corroded connection at the starter or possibly the solenoid is going bad, unfortunately to even check for either issue they have to remove the intake manifold to access the starter motor, i.e. high labor cost.

If the battery is more than 3-4 years old or so, it's 95% a bad battery. That's how they fail; work one day, flat dead the next, give it a jump and it's good for a day or two, and so on. Basically the plates get thin and you get intermittent open or short circuits internally. These days I have a "1 strike your out" policy on old batteries.

If it's not the battery it's probably a bad connection at the battery. Clean the connections until they're bright and shiny and reassemble.

Fire your crack diagnostic crew at your dealer.
