2008 4Runner with 68K

Howdy,
I'm looking into getting a 2008 with 68,000 miles (seller has it listed for $23000). It's a SR5 with V8. What are your thoughts/opinion on this one? I have HEARD that this is still relatively low mileage, but I want the expert opinion on this. Also, what should I be careful of before purchasing at this point. Any advice/opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

That is low mileage. The V8 is very reliable and easy on oil. In fact, I have over 5,000 miles on my last oil change and (unlike any other car I have or have owned) the oil still looks really new. Check for rust/leaks underneath, and any odd noises or clunks when driving. Also check for leaks under the engine area. If 4x4, make sure it all works. If not 4x4, the price is a little high. It's a great vehicle but don't overpay.

The guys here can tell you much more...I am not too mechanically inclined.
 
I have an 08 V6- wish I had a V8!- and it's an awesome truck- the best one I have owned. 68k is super low to a 4Runner V8 or V6- I have 70k with only routine maintenance done. Some on here have 300k and still going with their V8's.
The V8 guys will chime in.

Check the usual stuff for a truck Maintenance records, accidents, tire wear(even or uneven),brake wear-sized pistons
Best thing to do is Check other posts on here and make a list- there's tons on here.
Grab it quick- V8's are nice, good luck
 
The average miles driven per person aged 20 to 54 in the US is 15k according to the Highway Administration. I paid $27k last summer for a 2008 V8 SR5 with 55k miles. I'd say the mileage and price are inline.

I bought my '03 SR5 V8 4X4 with 78,000 miles for $13,000 back in July. There was another '03 SR5 V8 4X4 with 54,000 miles. They wanted $16,000 for it due to low mileage, even though the body had significant hail damage and a small dent on the rear bumper. Dealers are crazy, haha, so just make sure you compare the price/mileage to other local listings.
 
Sorry everyone...this is actually a 2006! Not an '08. Deal just got back to me...does this change anyone's opinion?
 
What part of the country do you live in? Geography affects resale values quite a bit. I know here in CO, '07 and '08 4X4 4Runners are still fetching prices in the low $20k's. They maintain their value extremely well here. Even though it's an SR5, the fact that it has the V8 is a bonus. I don't want to spark the whole V8 vs. V6 debate so I will just simply say that both are great, strong motors. I chose to go with the V8 and couldn't be happier. It's a durable design (cast iron block instead of aluminum) and has been around for over a decade. I wouldn't worry about the fact that the one you're looking at has 70k miles. It's just getting broken in at that point.

The price sounds a little high but if there is some negotiating room you might be able to get a deal. I'd be curious to know a few more details before I said this was a bargain or a ripoff. I have 69k miles on my '07 SE 4X4 V8 and it runs like a champ. The only thing I've done to it is change the oil and the gear oil in the differentials. With the 100k iridum plugs in the V8, the 100k rated coolant, the sealed transmission, etc. there really isn't anything you need to do to service these trucks until the 90k mile timing belt change. In fact, I had my alignment done last month and I had the shop look at my brake pads since I've never had to change them. He said I still have about 40% remaining on the front pads. There is a good chance I will get 100k miles out of the factory brake pads!

Anyway, they're great trucks. Let us know what you decide on.

Not drastically but I'd use that to negotiate the price lower. Regardless of miles, the perception is it is an older vehicle. '06 saw all of the mid-generation updates (projector style headlights, LED tail lights, updated front fascia, etc.) but there were not significant changes between '06 and '08.
 
I agree that sounds a bit high. I just picked up my 1st 4Runner a little over a month ago. Granted I got a great deal b/c a family member works at the stealership but I paid 18K for an 07 4Runner Sport Model V6 w/ 60k miles...On a side note if you can get a good deal, jump at it. I've had jeeps and other 4WD vehicles over the years and the 4runner trumps them all. Hands down best vehicle i ever purchased. Good Luck!!!

PS A few things I learned on this forum..
1. Slight ticking is normal in toyota engines
2. Small clunk after braking is normal - and can be reduced w/ some lube
3. Most fixes you need are easy and there is probably 100 threads on here about anything you could ever need.

Excellent. I gotta tell you, I really hope I can get them down in price. There is a similar one in the area that is already $2500 less! I have liked the 4runner for a long time, and hope to get into one that I can have for LONG time! Thanks for all the feedback, and I will keep you all posted.

^^^ To the op, if you're close enough, I'd do this for sure. This is a good deal - and you get the hood scoop that adds +30 hp! (Not really, but they do look d*** good)

Considering that I paid $28k before taxes and tags for a NEW V6 '08 Sport in November of '08, I'd say $23k for an '08, let alone an '06, is just nutz.

As far as mileage, my '08 T4R is my 6th Toyota and my 3rd T4R. Of the previous 5 Toyotas, 4 sold in great condition with 1) 178,000 miles 2) 215,000 miles 3) 205,000 miles 4) 152,000 miles. The 5th is still in service, driven by my youngest son, with 195,000 miles on the clock and going strong. I have 64,000 on my like-new '08.
 
It depends on what part of the country,here in ST. Louis,a truck like mine is $27,900 at the dealer and a buddy just sold his 06 Sport V-8 for $22,900.Nice looking truck Nuke,mine looks identical to yours,but my front windows have the same tint as the back.
 
I am in Vermont, a place known for jacking prices on 4-wheel drives because of the winters. While searching other ads I found an identical 2006 model with less mileage for $21000, so I know I have some wiggle room on price.

I have to say I am really impressed with how many miles some you guys are getting from your vehicles! This makes me feel much, much better about looking at one with only 68K!
 
In 2006 i bought my 2003 Sport Edition V8 that had 16k on it for $20,500.

In February 2011 I bought my 2008 Sport Edition V8 that had 42k on it for $25000. I know, I know,...sounds a little high, but there were some other mitigating factors on this deal:

1) The truck had been put on the lot the day before, there were 2 other parties all over it and one was a guy i knew that was going to his bank to get a bank check to put his down payment on the table.

2) I had a 2010 Sequoia i bought 8 months prior, brand new, and they were going to give me THE SAME DAMN AMOUNT THAT I PAID FOR IT! (granted while i was waiting for my new-to-me 2008 4Runner, a rather large, long-bearded, long white-fur coat wearing Russian on a friggin satellite phone was in the process of purchasing my old Sequoia and preparing to ship it to the Ukraine!).
 
Well, I'm sold. After reading what Nuke said about his three T4R, I have no doubt that this is the right choice! Now I have to get the dealer to give me a good number! Keep everyone posted.
