200RPM surge

Over the weekend I replaced the plugs on my 98SR5. When I drove it, I noticed a surge in the throttle of about 200RPM back and forth while under acceleration. So, I went back and replaced the plug wires, thinking that might be what it needed. It was running rough before I changed the plugs / wires, but it has never had a surge. The plugs / wires made a huge improvement in power and response, but now this surge has come along. It idles nice and smooth. I am thinking I might change the fuel filter and see if that takes care of it. I bought the SR5 in October, and we love it. It has 211k on it, and by the looks of the plugs I pulled out, it was long overdue for a tune-up. Any suggestions on the surge??

Sounds like you are right in the ball park in trying to diagnose as it could be spark or fuel related. Throwing any codes or stored? have you tried swapping coil packs to see if anything changes?

No codes, and I had not thought about swapping the paks..I did notice, however, that 2 of the coil paks have Toyota lables on them and one does not...

switch packs, also just because there is no CEL doesnt mean there is no code, pending code will pop up if you use a good scanner, pepboy can do it for you for free.

Thanks T4r4life...the oddest thing happened. This afternoon on the way home from work, no surge.It was gone. I had to run around 80 this morning going to work, maybe that had something to do with it...cleared it out? I'm stilll gonna take it and have it scanned and replace my fuel filter...let's see what happens!

that sure sounds like a fuel problem to me, what kinda plugs did you get? when was the last time fuel filter was changed? Mass air flow sensor was cleaned?

NGK Nickel #3967...I should probaly check the MAF, she had 210000 miles when I got her, and judging by the looks of the plugs that I pulled out of it, she's overdue for all the PM I can give her.
