Hello,

Well someone egged my 4Runner on Mischief Night and destroyed my rear passenger door on drivers side.:sobbing: I had the door painted and it looks good. Stealer has a good body shop.:bravo:

However, when I went to pick up my baby, there was no paperwork, invoice, or keys. :( So the stealer offered to loan me a 2010 Prius with 169 miles on the clock for my troubles. After driving it, I was impressed.

I am seriously thinking of trading in my Greenhouse Gas Hog to a Green Mobile! Is something wrong? If they throw in a rear view camera (necessary due to poor visibility out hatch split window) I might keep the car. I am nutz to give up the best, hands down SUV on the planet to go green, even thinking about it?

Nope. I'm going to go against the grain as well. I love the 3rd gen Prius. Previously, I never considered a hybrid due to the added premium over a gas only vehicle. However, the 3rd gen Prius has a lower base price and a decently equipped Prius III is $26k. Probably about $28k for what I want, navi and solar moonroof.

I wouldn't trade my 4Runner or give it up for a Prius. But with an extended commute (don't have a commute now, but if switching jobs, moving, etc.), I don't have any reservations of adding one to my stable. I need the 4Runner for 4WD to get to the snow and to haul my mountain bike around.

Well, I wouldn't mind adding one to the stable myself. Its a nice and well engineered car. The center console looks like something off the Federation Starship Enterprise. I use 3 gallons of gas a day traveling to work and back in the 4R and the Prius would cut it down to one. As you replied, a long commute should make a Prius a smart move.
 
I second Uneek...i love the 3rd gen Prius. My brother has one and he loves it...his is Level IV. Personally, i would get Level V for the LED headlights. I commute on dark highways at night and therefore, need the extra lighting. The only thing that i would need to get used to is the sluggish acceleration...i am still not used to the driving aspect of a hybrid. Leather is a must for me due to having young kids. Even with Level V, the price of the 2010 Prius is still a relative bargain!
 
Don't buy it, especially if it has to do with saving the environment. If you want a fuel efficent car the buy a TDI Golf or Jetta. If that isn't the reason, the prius in general just look's stupid and it is an awful car.

Well, I consider Function over Form. I put 56 miles on a Level II, had to fill the tank because it was full before I left the Stealership. Only $0.75 needed. Fascinating. It is not an awful car. I think its a neat car for what it does.

I would like the Level 5 but it doesn't come with the Sunroof, so I would have settle for Level IV. I do need the LED Lights because it is pretty dark here too as Thai suggested. And yes, great value for the price!

Yeah, but the reliability and durability of a Prius far exceeds that of any VW.

Timing belt=$300 per 100k miles, brakes, and oil,+ regular maintenance thats it. Plus the VW will get consitant milage at any speed. doing 80-90mph it will get 43mph

yeah, but you're assuming that the VW will be flawless...but we all know that it is not. My neighbor has a VW Jetta...his daughter loves it...until it broke down over and over again and had it LEMONED. Hell, she had less than 20k miles when VW bought back the VW. John, i know that you love your Land Rover and VW, but you need to be more open-minded...what you've written about LR and VW in the past goes against NUMEROUS facts and stats that all show poor reliability and high maintenance costs on these vehicles. Blind enthusiasm is a bad thing.

The jetta will last longer, there are a few kinks in the line but it is better than the prius. And your argument too is assuming the prius is flawless, i could find someone that has lemon'd their prius but i stay away from prius owners so i really wont try to.
I would reccomend the prius to you and not reccomend the TDI jetta only if you have a 10 mile local commute, because that is what the prius is made for and seeing as the jetta would be diesel it is stupid to use it.
 
I'm far from a tree hugger. The only car I currently have that gets half decent mileage is a V6 Camry. But I do find the 3rd gen Prius to be a neat car and would consider it. The Prius V for its Lexus LS like features it's a bargain, too bad it doesn't have the solar moonroof, otherwise I'd go for that one. I can skip leather, so a Prius III over a IV. It's a better value than Lexus HS250.

If we're in Europe, where diesel is easy to get, then a diesel would be a better choice. There's not many diesel stations around me, so for me a Prius would better than a diesel. Besides, there has to be a reason that Prius nameplate by itself sells more than all of VW... (I read it some where that Prius can easily compete as a brand of its own and not a model.)

That first statement is the reason the that the prius sells more than all of VW. Also the prius is a trend like 24" dubs and Caddy escalades, they'll fade off. Thats wierd i got a boatload of diesel stations around me, there pretty competitive in price too.

I could assume that the Prius would be flawless based on the INDEPENDENT DATA of NUMEROUS data that confirms it. Toyota's hybrid system has been flawless...and ultra reliable. That is the difference.

Where are you getting data about Jetta lasting longer than Prius?? Kinks? Kinks are never good.

My brother drives his '10 Prius on the highway mostly and gets 54 mpg!! His fuel economy is better than EPA. That is the problem with EPA...it usually underestimates hybrid fuel economy due to the testing protocols.

Trend? Really?! Hell, it is one long lasting freaking trend!! :D In fact, there is currently a 6-month to a year wait to order a Prius! I am sure VW Jetta TDI has the same wait period! :D Remember, this wait period is at a time when gas prices are relatively low AND the economy is in the dumper...thus, this is not even a time when hybrids should sell well! BTW, there are little to no haggling room when you buy a Prius or other hybrids from Toyota. Oh yeah, Prius has been on the road for how long now and there is still a waiting list?? Get off your blinders John and think about that for one moment.

its a trend, its all the movie stars and tree huggers have them, and they are then followed by the regular people. After that it will turn political so we should end this.

I've read, 60mpg is easily attainable by most drivers with a slight change to driving habits.

I believe it was local newspaper that did a test/review of the Prius with drivers who drove regular gas sipping cars and along with the cheif engineer of the Prius. Part of the test was to see who could acheive the best mileage with the Prius. They said most testers could get high 50s and 60s with little to no change to their driving habits. 70mpg was attained by a few, but the editor noted that it would probably anger and piss off many around you. The chief engineer managed an astonishing 94mpg!

I know most won't see high 60s, let alone 90mpg. But to beat EPA and get 50s pretty easy, that is very good for a car that is very practical with seats suitable for 5 and very comfortable for 4.
