The best part about this design is that it doesnt make the 06+ 4th gen look dated AT ALL. In fact, the 4th gen looks "newer" to someone who is unaware.

A new design ALWAYS makes the prior design look dated, even if the new design is retro styling.
The Mustang guys tried to say the same thing you're saying when the '05 Mustang came out with it's retro styling. By the time the '05 Mustangs started to be seen on the streets, the '04 styling looked dated and old. The same thing will happen to the 4th gen once the 5th gen is on the streets. It's hard to swallow, but us 4th gen owners now have the old model, like it or not. I'm not going to try and fool myself into thinking the 4th gen doesn't look dated....
arty:arty:arty:arty:.....LOVE IT. Tail lights are just ok, but the rest of that beast looks AWESOME...cant wait to see it Shadow Mica and or Black. Put a V8 in that thing and I do think my 08 will be traded in (after the 1st year bugs are worked out that is) . Love the dash board, the truck just looks bad-ass!!!!!!!

Nice. Styling wise I like it a lot more than the 4th gen.

Seriously, looks like a good back-to-its-roots vehicle.
I couldn't tell from the article: Does it have a manually shifted T-case? If so, I will be ecstatic, even if it means losing the multi-mode 4wd.

Overall I say big Kudos to Toyota for getting back to the rugged roots of the 4runner!

IMHO, I believe there may be enough of a difference (at least in print/picture) that the 4th will retain a contemporary style. The only risk I see to the 4th looking dated and old is if someone chose not to maitain the finish of the vehicle. Keep those 4ths shiny people!!!
As a side note, I am liking these articles referencing the desire for the V8. Me likey.

I read in one review that when you press the "Party Mode" button all the girls within 10 ft of the truck instantly take off their tops. No kidding.
I didn't much like the look of the Limited, but this trail edition looks great!
The scoop goes really well with the more angular lines.
I agree though with the comment that this looks Cruiser-fied. I'm glad they didn't put the white roof on the top
Only thing I don't really like the look of is the pattern on the seat covers. But, if you're going to spend near $40k on a new car then I guess a few hundred more on some nice seat covers or even a leather upgrade wouldn't hurt.

I think they are really smart for offering a limited that looks like that. It will definitely appeal to more people and widen their market.

Like the FJ, the 4wd controls are on the overhead console, above the review mirror.

Any word on the location of the "Party Mode" button? It will be an epic fail if it isn't bright red and pushable with the lip of a beer bottle.

I agree that the 4th gens will look even more dated as they age and people just don't keep up on washing/waxing them. That always seems to make any vehicle look older.
Don't get me wrong, I love the styling of the 4th gens just as much as I've always loved the styling of the 3rd gens. Although this new 5th gen hasn't really grown on me yet, I'm still not going to kid myself into thinking the 4th gen will not look dated parked next to one. Love it or hate it, the new model looks fresh and the old model looks...well, old. That's not a bad thing because it still is a really nice looking vehicle, but it's just not the newest and greatest anymore. Besides, the 4th gen was starting to get a bit long in the tooth and they needed to change the styling.
